Some of us belive that the pressure of the steam created by passing a flame over the damp wood helps POP the whiskers up better than just letting them dry naturally. This in our opinion makes for a better job of whiskering

You may have a point there. I'll get out the heat gun on the next build. Bill

It's been my experience that a flame from a propane torch in nessasary to generate the steam necessary.Even a painters heat gun gun doesn't generate enough heat to make the steam necessary to pop the whiskers. Not that you can't dry the stock with the heat gun but a torch seems to make a difference.

Hey Mitch, Good to have you back. Hope all is right with you and yours!

Back on topic....How about my Milwaukee heat gun? It will char wood on it's highest setting. Then again, it isn't your average painter's heat gun....it will light a cigar in a pinch.

Enjoy, J.D.

Water can somewhat higlight the grain. Some judge a smooth, flat stock blank by wetting the wood to get a glipse of the curl. Light and dark curls stand out on cherry and maple, but not to the extent they will with stain & finish. Walnut plus water is about what you get with a finish.

Not surprising that AF/water will bring out some grain.
