Thanks for posting the link for Old Potero Skagan . I want to try some of that stuff , I bet it ain't cheap though :winking: . This tread has aroused my curiosity about early whiskey , so I did a little research on the web today . I found two other rye's that are supposed to be close to what the original stuff was , they are , Isaiah Morgan rye and Canadian rye lot#40 . I couldn't find any of them at the biggest liquor store near me . But since I have also never tried rye whiskey , I bought a bottle of Wild Turkey rye (101 proof) . It doesn't have the strong taste thier bourbon has , the flavor is more subtle , I must say I like it , good sippin' whiskey ! I also found a good website on whiskey www.ellenjaye.com .

Yeah Patch Knife, I tell ya, that Old Portrero looks pricy, that's for sure so; Since it's from the San Fran area, I doubt seriously I'll even be able to order it from here anhow, so I'm gonna stick with Jim Beam Rye for now. Regardless, I now have a focus on where to look, and what to look for. I realize the rums, and wines, and ciders and such were probable far more prevelent on the frontier, but was interested in the distilling habits of our 18th century kinsmen more than anything. Like you, this thread really got me thinking and i've learned quite a bit too.
Kida make ya go hmmm :hmm:

Home distilling is an easy science. Any one who can load, shoot and clean a muzzleloader can build a safe 'still. Would make a neat period type display at those period correct rondyvoos too.
Distilled spirits can be made from any source of alcohol, like crude wine, cider, fermented grains or even potatoes.
I'm sure our forefathers were frugal and used many sources, from produce off the farm, to wines unfit for drinking.

greetings,

during prohibition, my grandfmother (God rest her soul) made the best gin and whisky in all detroit. years after prohibition ended and much pleading and whining on my part, she agreeded to show me how  . the whisky was only run thru once. the trick was to keep the level low in the still. the booze was cut with backings, (the liquid that followed the alcohol. pretty good stuff.

pure distiled booze can be bought in mexico. think it was 160 proof?? back in 84 in tialuna it was advertzed as the offical drink of the 84 olimpics..

..ttfn..grampa..
