thank you men, I mostly hunt, I do shoot a lot though, my long guns have there place just not for hiking in to my area at night to hunt hogs. one of those zuove are on the bucket list like the navy arms buffalo hunter .58

For many years I used a T/C New Englander .50 with 26" barrel as my regular season deer rifle that is "carbinish".

I have a .45 X 25" X 15/16" that I like a lot. But when heading for the woods I usually grab my .45 X 36" X 13/16" flintlock. That, IMHO, is a shorty in my book.

My favorite rifled musket is my Pedersoli Cook and Brother carbine. Light, handy, easy to carry and accurate. In addition to the history it represents, it makes a great hunting rifle.

This flintlock (.45 x 36") was built for me as a short, handy woods rifle and has served in that role with distinction. I like short flintlocks pretty well and all the others are 38".

This "kid's rifle" is as short in barrel length as I can warm up to. .45 X 25" X 15/16". Anything shorter would have to be a pistol.

My version of a .69 cal 1842 rifled Springfield musket converted to a Confederate carbine. Original except for rear sight and added swivels. Relined by Hoyt.

2. Custom built little .54 that I named “ The Professor’s Gun “. Featured this one in the Photo section of the forum with the complete story about this one.

Either one of these will drop those big hogs you’re always hunting In your neck of the woods. LOL.

Howie, The Enfield Musketoon is rifled. Has a 24” barrel that’s 1:48. Likes a .562 ball or either .570 or .575 mini. Has progressive twist which helps mini’s from stripping out when using heavier charges.

Weight of rifle is around 7 lb’s.

Long time ago there were .80 bore carbines marketed as Cook Bros.
Wanted one so bad. Don't know what I'd have done with it but it would have been fun.

I've gotten to where any of my .58 I just shoot patched roundballs it's the caliber that I get consistent pass threws with a 276 gr roundballs goes plum through any hog I want to kill. I can't say that for my 50s or 58s that's why I use conicals in those calibers. Don't get me wrong I've killed big pigs with the .54 rb I just don't feel like tracking them through the briars every big hog I've shot with the .58 patched rb they either drop in their tracks or go 10-15 yards

This is a TC Hawken Green mountain 54 cal pair. One that I bought unseen had a bulge in the barrel so I had to cut and re-thread the breech end. With only a 15/16" 54 cal it is light and handy
