I've been looking at plans and images and except for the tassles and knots, the construction is extremely similar to what it takes to make a shooting bag. Who has made one?
I sure fetched him right from my taxidermist buddy :gr
Sporran means "hairy purse" in gaelic. It was part of a mans garment prior to having pockets. It hung around longer in scotland where kilts stayed and are a more prominent garment. The kilt nor sporran are native to the isles so they go back a ways.
I have one sporran that has a cantle that dates to 1939, but it was made for the 200th Aniv of the founding of the Black Watch, and was copied off of a cantle that is in the Regimental museum and is supposed to have been worn by one of the plank owners of the regiment.
Another sporran I have is made from about a 12-14 inch circle of leather, plus a flap, a hanger strap and then tassles, I will try and take some pics, and draft a pattern here soon, its not based on anything other than something I just thought up.
You tell 'em Dog! By Godfrey, if you mess with a Scot you deserve what you get!
Part of the reason they are so tough is the FOOD they eat! I still have nightmares of my childhood suppers with Grandma Filthie. I would rather have eaten thistles!
Oh dear gawd...boiled cabbage...ulp...white navy beans...******* n' peas...oh good lord look out! I'm gonna hurl...!!!!! :barf:
I have a whole bunch of good jokes for you, "? fellas?" but I don't think your sense of humour is functioning on this topic. I was surprised to see a picture of bekilted scots with rifles, I thought they just threatend to play the bagpipes and their enemies quickly surrenderd :stir: :rotf:
Nothing wrong with humor, but making fun of someones heritage is quite ignorant. Do you get a laugh at everyone thats different than you?
But you are right about the bagpipes, the only instrament ever consisdered an implement of war was meant to alert the enemy as well as give orders. And thats dating back to ancient egypt. Scots are not bashful about a fight. Ever see Gunga Din? :blah:
I would never kid a Scot about his kilt. I'm not Scot but fell in love with a Scottish girl once. My son married an Irish/Scott girl and he has his own kilt. And, my ancestors, the Romans wore a kilt-like garment with a sporan-like pouch.
I don't joke about the kilt. But, I do think of a fight scene in the John Claude VanDamme movie 'Blood Sport' that involved a kilt. Just watching that scene puts me in serious pain. :shocked2:
