and what is your favorite load. Mine is 100 grains of goex 3fg and a 490 ball. over bait. Now if only i can shoot a bear with it :haha: I will be hunting in northern minnesota as it so hard to get a bear permit in wisc

My avatar is a cinnamon bear I passed up last year. Shot a black bear a couple days after taking the picture of the cinnamon.
Used a 100 gr. FFg under a .530 RB in my flintlock. Baiting isn't allowed in Oregon anymore so its all spot and stalk. At least you can buy a general season bear tag over the counter, no draw.

spot and stalk would not work in minnesota's/ wisconsins dense forests

We've got the "wet" side and the "dry" side of the state to choose from. The wet side tends toward denser forests, but there are clear cuts. The dry side is much more open and better for spotting 'em.

I don't hunt over Bait but I usually buy my Bear Tag and shoot one if I see one.The few bears I have shot were shot with 90 grains of 3f and a .490 ball.I have shot 4 bears and they kill very easy when hit in the vitals.
Keeping in mind the biggest wasen't much over 200 lbs.

Halftail,
Never hunted bear but I envy those of
you that can. Ohio has a small bear population
mostly thanks to PA. and W.Va in the Eastern
part of the state. No hunting season as yet.
In the event you would shoot one you had better
have
claw marks on your back and teeth marks in your
ass, or you will pay dearly. ODNR takes a very
dim view of shooting one. If we could hunt them
when the population increases I would still not
want to hunt them over bait. That's just me, to
each his own.
snake-eyes :hmm:

I've taken five bears with a traditional bow. One in Michigan and four in Ontario.

This one was taken with an 82lb all wood osage bow. I'd like to take the next one with one of my flinters.

Hunting over bait takes considerable effort and time.I haven't got any problem either with anyone that hunts over bait I just don't have the time at that particular time of year.
Bear Meat, when done up right tastes very good.

Hunting bear with nothing but a sharp stick takes a cool hand. Good job.

I have always thought it would be cool to go on a black bear hunt. Some day I want to go on a brown bear or grizzley hunt. For blackbear where do you guys aim when using a roundball? I normally aim for the vitals on other game. I would be using a 54cal roundball with around 90-100 grains of Goex. I live here in Colorado. My dad used to black bear hunt and actually got a big bear with his 7mm.

A bear isn't built quite the same as a deer. Its vitals are a tad further forward. All the extra hair can throw you off as to where the hair ends and bear starts as well.
Somebody had a link on here a while back showing how a bear is laid out. Will see if I can find it.

Hopefully this is it:

Bear shot placement

As with most things here in Northern Wisconsin, it is getting silly to keep applying for up to six years to finally get a harvest permit.

I've hunted bear with my .54 caliber Renegade and roundball. The last time, I never saw one I wanted to shoot. We did take one off my property about eight or nine years ago. It weighed 284 dresses. A real nice bear.

Also since people have finally stopped baiting them around their homes, they have moved back in the forest more. And if the dog hunters have first week, then forget it....

You killed both just with a bow...
I admire your courage :hatsoff:
I'd be scared to death to have a bear so close to me, hahaha! :rotf:

The current issue of Bear and Bear Hunting Magazine
has a nice article on hunting bear with flint and
side hammer guns. The writer describes his own
loads and caliber choices. Also, since there are
a couple of nice stickbow kills pictured in this
thread, I should point out that the same issue has
a story about a longbow hunt in Wisconsin.

Got a small, but prime, male black -over bait, a few portages out of Biscoe, Ont.
Also got to chase a number of admirably fast and vicious bears with a pack of dogs, up in the timber regions outside of Moscow, Maine. Did'nt score, but the excitement and exertion [try running obstacles with a .54 GPR] was surreal.
Longshot

I've shot two with the mountain rifle-I got one. Long story, unhappy ending. I will try again, though. 90 grains of ffg under a .490 roundball. Sept. 1 will find me about 20 miles north of Duluth.

BTW great pics Ron (as always)
