Looks to me like he has an 1858 Remington revolver. Shotgun is probably not a muzzleloader.

Yeah, North and South, book 2. I was in Book one....battlefield reenactor for the Battle of Churubusco where Orry Main (Swayze) gets blown up on the bridge. Fun times!

There's more than a couple things that say ''not a muzzleloader'' or at least seems not to be. The picture is not great. There must be some other pics from the movie.

IMFDB says it is a muzzleloader.

IMFDB shows a different shotgun at the top of the page than the other photos. Note also how the hammer on the muzzleloader comes over the breech but the one in question hits behind the breech. If a fake ramrod is added it can’t be lone enough to load because the forend iron limits how far it could go into the stock. Remember those old movies with trapdoor springfields used as muzzleloaders? Same here.
