Who Makes aHawken Style Rifle?
I'm not knocking the T/C Hawken type which I've had good experience with or the Lyman Great Plains Rifle which I have long admired.
I thought there might be an independent gun smith creating a rifle from scratch much like the one I gave to my Grandson after many tears of banging about.


Most gunsmiths seem dedicated to the Long Rifle of an earlier age.
I am thinking of a .50mcaliber percussion Hawken style rifle with a Green Bountaint barrel to be a prize in a contest I am dreaming up, as a prize.
My ability to afford such a thing is a bit wobbly but I woldliike to leave as a mark of my existence.

So many smiths take orders to produce a gun in a year or two. My time is somewhat limited by a man who won't tel me so "a couple of years" is out of the question.
My hope would be to have a contest between Newbies, aided by coaches from the various clubs. .
A lot would depend on the inherent honesty of ML riflemen and it could be fun

So if I can locate a gunsmith and can afford such an expensive item I might be able to get this going.

I did some looking myself not long ago, but my findings were it mainly depends on your budget.
Most custom rifles I've seen, you need deep pockets, and maybe an extra arm and a leg to throw in.

I was thinking in or around 15 hundred or so.
I might be able to approach that figure so assuming there is no intervening physical semi catasrophy I might be able to proceed.
The exact Hawken reproduction I got in 1980 or so for $800 1980 pre Obama dollars would probably be more than 1500 in today's dollars.So maybe this is just a dream.

The worst thing you can say about anyone is that the "Means well". I may be saying this about me before this is over.

I was thinking of some of the better riflemen of the various clubs picking out an average shooting newbie and coaching him toward excellence by whatever method to compete with other such teams of coach and newbies for the most improvement over a relatively short period of time with apprize worth winning.
The overall goal to encourage new riflemen toward excellence and maybe give a little publicity to the struggling rifle maker who puts out a good product that he doesn't regards a mirical device deserving of an extra bonus price..


I thighs this might stir up some activity and possibly encourage some other nut to repeat this sort of thing on an annual basis

Dutch, this is an admirable thing to do! I hope you find a gun maker that can do this for you at a price that doesnt break the bank!

As for the "He means well". I don't think anyone would view you that way. From what I've read here and elsewhere you have contributed a great deal to the muzzleloading world, and yes you do mean well; However you sir have IMHO done well!

Well Dutch, I have read about MANY men on this here forum that are "builders". Some claim they are retired (but we all know what they do in the shop in their spare time :haha: ).

Hows about one you builder guys here stepping up and making this idea of Dutch's happen?

If I could do it we would be talking specifics of the gun but I dont think the "winner" would be honored and I know you wouldnt (even with 90 year old eyes my work would SUC_!)

You probably live near one of the best makers of Hawken rifles in the country, Bob Browner. His backlog is such that your request wouldn't fit your timeline and certainly not your budget. You might want to contact him or PM me for more information about the Gemmer Muzzle Loading Gun Club. We might be able to find you a rifle.

Available production guns are pretty limited. One of the nicer looking guns is the Pedersoli Missouri River Hawken 50 caliber rifle in maple or walnut. It is made in Italy, but can be found at Cabela's in your budget.

The Missouri River Hawken by Pedersoli has already caught my attention as being most handsome.
I could never find a price quoted for any Pedersoli..
Having no wheels is also handicap
Perhaps I should have thought of this last year when I wa more self propelled.

I have some hoes of passing THE SYSTEM's distribution on to my son but that's not certain I fear he would add disown knowledge based on nothing and destroy any heritage.
I am sure that everyone knows I have been rolling in dough from my Ebook sales. To give you an idea othis landslide of wealth,this monthI have sold a grand total of TWO, Count 'em.
My netgainnafterpaying the credit card people will be an astounding $8 or $9 dollars. Party Hearty!
When I went into this when people sent checks, I was told to expect a minimum of 3% would result in bounced checks”¦
I had about 5400 sales before establishing the credit card system and had only ONE case where a check bounced that stayed bounced. That is astounding. In addition I have received about 5 Conciece checks from people who had done so well with a borrowed copy that they felt dishonest in not "Paying their dues". That is even more amazing.

I have come to the conclusion that BP ML riflemen was a group are remarkably honest as a group and as individuals I jave had one request for a refund by a person in Utah who said he knew all that stuff long before. I refunded and referred him to proctologist./

We have an entire political party against our hobby, the younger folks are staring into wee IPhones and digital game boxes and our newbies are growing older and rarer.
The traditional Patched Roudd Ball rifleman isn't too much involved in THE EASY WAY to be attracted to the unadjustable Inlines because they want to do amazing things with something dating back before the American Civil War
When all is said and done if I have 20 entries I will end up with one winner and a happy coach and 19 Newbies and 19 coaches will hate me.


I want to stir up an interest in accuracy and maybe start the practice of creating an annual event. I am pretty much on Social Security. what fund of money comes from what I was paid for giving up my trashed Mini Cooper last December.

I'll also not reveal the standards I am going to judge by in order to make it difficult to figure How to Cheat.

How about Mike Roby in Prescott, AZ?
I've seen his work and even own a rifle he made; #68, a very fine 50 cal Kentucky style percussion. I'm sure he could do a Hawken style.

I see, for the first time that you are local to my area..
I would expect gun makers to come to me.

The advantage of a Bass Pro shop or Cabelas rifle is that I could buy a gift certificate for the rifle which I could mail to the winner, which he could redeem at his local store, No shipping, no insurance no fuss.

I am involved in Dialysis which keeps me nailed down pretty much on Monday, Tuesday und friday.

I've built 2 Hawkens ...one for me and one for a customer who wanted a "real" Hawken, although LHed. I bought a Stith parts set and made what I think is an excellent copy of a Hawken...It's an S. Hawken w/ a 36" bbl in .54 cal. and premium maple. I no longer take orders.

The customer was impressed w/ it and uses it for elk......Fred

Dutch, I think you know Taylor Sapergia excellent builder out of Canada. With the 30% better US dollar he might be able to build one close to your price range. If you tell him the whole story he may be able to work with you an timelines. I have one of his LH Hawken and it is a work of art. Mine has two barrels, 54 and 62 and a spare tuned lock.

This gun has seen a lot of use over the years so stock etc is not pristine.
