Why do you use real BP?

Because that is what works in Flintlocks. The imitation stuff just doesn't ignite well in Flintlocks.

One may as well ask, "Why shoot muzzle loaders at all?". A modern firearm will always outperform an antique ignition/powder system...so what? I don't shoot blackpowder to have the umpteenth degree of performance.
I whack a rock on a bit of steel which ignites a pan of powder in front of my face which goes through the hole in the side of the barrel which ignites a charge of a fairly obsolete type of propellant....why? ...BECAUSE I LIKE IT THAT WAY!

This is also closest to my thoughts as well. If ballistics are your chief concern, why not use smokeless powder in those convenient metallic cartridges?

It is a good question, and there are some good answers above.

If it were possible, I doubt that I'd use anything but black powder.I use Pyrodex in the caplocks, because I save the real BP for the flintlock.all of the reasons given are the same ones that I would give. The old timmers knew nothing of ballistics so 100fpsMV would mean nothing to them.I too shoot BP cause its the same now as in the 1600s.One of the few things that remains the same is BP Traditional Muzzleloading, and "yes" I savor the aroma.

The aroma, hehe yes I do like it as well. For me, it works better in my pistols and groups tighter in my main rifle. One of my smaller rifles loves pyrodex, so I only have a pound for that rifle alone. the rest get the real stuff. Now if I can just find a local place to get it I'll be happy.

I'm a newbie and was recommended to try Goex, over pyrodex, and I'm glad I did, not only do I like the fact it is authentic, but while my buddy shoots pyrodex, he was still cleaning his gun 15 minutes after the fact I ran my last clean patch through my Great Plains.....Goex All the Way !!
