I believe that original baby dragoons were supposed to have the square trigger guard, while the Wells Fargo model had the rounded version. Is this an inaccuracy from uberti?

I have what I think is a .31 Baby Dragoon in brass with square back trigger guard. Does anyone know who made it [imported by FIE]? It is in pristine condition. I have not shot it, but Betty will this spring, I think. Dale

They're just marketing names to try and keep the variations straight, but the "Baby Dragoon" usually has the square back trigger guard, and the "1849" and "1849 Wells Fargo" do not. The name "Wells Fargo" is itself inaccurate as they never actually purchased any.

I have one with a steel frame and brass square back trigger guard that was imported by an outfit called EIG. It has proof marks on the cylinder but I can't find a date code on it anywhere. Under the loading lever "A Marco" is all that appears as to maker. The reason I picked it up rather than a new one was because it had the proper square back trigger guard and was not all stamped up with warnings.

”We” drive the market. The sellers will make anything to match the market regardless whether it’s a good replica of an original. Stubnose and birds head grips are all the rage now even if they are complete fantasy guns. Buy what suits you weather it’s right or not.

The Baby Dragoon should have a square back trigger guard and no loading lever as well as rounded cylinder stop notches. The Uberti has a round trigger guard and the back of the barrel lug to cylinder face distance should be much shorter.

The heydays of the black powder revival (60s-80s) saw the importation of countless of these small frame revolvers by countless importers and many different manufacturers. They came with brass and steel frames and sometimes the incorrect trigger guard for the model they portray. I never saw one with the oval locking notches and they had square notches with and without lead-ins. I do have a Replica Arms Baby Dragoon which has no manufacturer's marks. It has a 6" barrel, square back trigger guard and the Texas Rangers/Indian fight scene with square notches.

The 1849 Colt will have a round trigger guard, a loading lever and square cylinder stop notches with a lead-in and either 5 or 6 shot cylinders. About 3,000 1849s were made with a 3" barrel and no loading lever. These were called the Wells Fargo models.
