I've been shooting black powder since 1964.. at least half the time, whatever tool I need is not where I am when I need it! When will I learn? Learning time is growing short!

???????????? I have been shooting since the 60s too. Never have owned a RR puller. What pre tell do you need one for?
Did you mean ball puller for your RR?

Try wrapping your leather belt tight around the ramrod and then tie the belt to your bumper, a tree, etc. Give the gun a good yank and the ramrod usually comes free. The leather belt will tighten around the rod through friction and not slip.

Well today it's because a nice guy shooting next to me licked up my rifle and decided to wipe the bore with a patch and product. He used the loading end of the ramrod to push it in. Now until I get home in 3 days that ramrod is stuck in there...People mean well.. I've done the same thing and learned better myself. But I don't have my repair kit.. so it rides home stuck.

It was just sort of frustrating. I never shoot a caplock anymore. But today I was because it was gifted to me and I had one like it about 1974. I had hoped to get off more than five shots.

Try the belt. Just pull back as straight as possible! Don't bend the rod as you pull as you can snap the rod off.

I tried that and just could not get enough friction with the rod . I'll get it done at home with correct tools. Need to make a "please don't touch" sign for the rifle when I have to go down range.

Use your shoelace and a prussic knot, or a dedicated string.
I even put circular grooves in the end of the ramrod for a better grip, also helps if your ramrod is slightly longer.
I haven't used my ramrod puller since the 80's. It's to damn heavy and bulky to carry any way.

Why would anyone pick up another's gun without asking first?
I don't understand that either. An old guy I sometimes shot with adjusted my site for me saying it was off. My site was off? Who was shooting it, I was . Nice guy and he had been shooting many more years than me but....my sights were not off until he messed with them.

As clyde stated there is a piece of cordage in the bottom of my shooting bag just in case, doesn't take up much room and is light. As all my shooting is from the bag, rather I am hunting or range shooting. I have learnt over the years what to carry in as small a space as possible.

I've never had a rr puller. I do carry a jag for loading that particular caliber. When it's screwed onto the rod it gives a good hold for pulling. All I ever needed.

Thanks for explaining. Where we shoot, no one picks up another's gun without permission. I know you said he had good intentions, but he should have asked you.

Nobody said anything about picking up a gun when someone was down range.
That was in fact what happened. Rangemaster had everyone lay down their weapons and proceed down range. When I returned there was a guy about 50 standing there with a sheepish look. Just said I could tell your bore needed to be wiped so I out down a patch with my special mixture on it. "Now I can't get it out!"

No worries, I'm taking care of it tomorrow. But it was weird. And had the range master not also been downrange with the shooters it never could have happened. As it is, I may not go back there. I have plenty of farmland on which to shoot but miss shooting with my friends so I will occasionally go to the club.

That is not only wrong but just flat out weird. Why would some random schmuck start tinkering with someone else's stuff?? You don't mess with a man's rifle, truck, dog, or woman. You have more patience then me good sir.
