If you don't mind, I would like to ask a couple of questions in regards to free ranging wild boar.

Has anyone here ever used a scent, call or combination of the two to lure in a wild boar within shooting range? I was watching a show the other day called Wild Russia and the narrator had a segment about Russian Boar having a rut. I see from my internet searches that there are manufacturers of calls as well as different scent products. I was wondering if these things work well or are they an utter waste of money. Could someone enlighten me with their experiences with any type of call or scent? Thank you.

We just put out some stuff called "Sow in Heat" today, never used it before but heard good things about it. Most of what we have used in the past was soured corn, Hawg Draw, Hog wild, and some vanilla extract. Have a game camera on the sow in heat to watch if it works or not.

If that's the same stuff from Wieser(??) then it's good stuff. I've used it and had boar come in from straight down wind. The only thing I've noticed is that they come in wound up and ready to fight over the sow they're smelling. Which makes hunting from the ground with a longbow especially interesting.

Ive tried using hog bombs in the peanut butter scent, ive used real peanut butter successfully but for some reason when they smelled the hog bomb they went around me. wound up coming out about 150 yards from me and all i could do was watch...

I have never used commercial scents but I have used predator calls. An open reed critter getter call blown loud and raspy works better than anything else I have tried. It works about 50 50, some hogs leave the area and others come in hot and heavy looking for a fight. It is worth a shot if you can see some hogs that you can't move up on. Chris

If you're calling varmints in an area infested with pigs there's a big possibility pigs will come in and fast. I make my calls out of rubber bands and the wooden tongue depressors like doctors use to check your throat. Good raspy sound. For scent cut up the kidney and save some urine when you kill a pig. One of my favorites is dig a hole straight down 2 feet deep with post hole diggers. Then spread about a half gallon of corn around it and on the trail to get their attention. Fill the hole with a bag of corn. One 50lb bag fills a two foot hole. Dump a box of strawberry or all/fruit jello on the corn. The morning dew will wet it and they can't resist it.
