Guys, I have a nice SXS 12ga percussion gun with interchangable choke tubes. When the doves are flying fast and furious, even the modified chokes make reloading more tedious when trying to seat the wads, particularly the over powder card and over shot card. Most of my shots are taken pretty close and I was wondering if it would hurt the threads if I just removed the tubes? Another option would be to purchase a couple more mod tubes and have them reamed out to cylinder bore.

Don-

Although i wouldn't guarantee it as damaging, i'd be hesitant to run a column of shot past exposed threads of a screw- in choke. Although i confess to being a congenital cheapskate, i'd spring for the extra tubes and have them reamed out to cyl. bore.

just my two cents.

good luck with your project

If it's a Pedersoli you may find that other mfg. tubes fit. I have both Remington and Mossberg tubes for mine. Tread lightly, don't force, and see how they fit. Be observant of the bottom interface.
Good luck,
R

Why not simply buy TWO cylinder bore chokes and put them in the gun when you are shooting doves? Don't expose those threads to fast moving shot. It will damage them.

Pedersoli does not - at least not that I have been able to find - sell cylinder bore choke tubes...or I'd have gone that route from the get go. The most open I have been able to get has been improved cylinder.

But other choke tubes may fit like Mossberg tubes. If you know anyone with a modern shotgun with screw in tubes you could try them to see if they fit then order that type.

YOu should be able to load wads through the improved cylinder tubes. The constriction is very slight. If not have them opened up if no one else's tube will fit that gun. In 12 gauge, it should not be a problem to find another brand of tubes that will fit. Call Brownell's about thread sizes.

Greetings,

I've used a few screw in tube chokes over the years and have found that some brands of "improved cylinder" were open just as much (or MORE!) as compared to what a "cylinder bore" choke measured.

Please don't take chances firing across those unprotected fine threads, or you'll have a ruined gun in short order. It's just not worth it. Go get the most open chokes you can, measure them, and if they are too tight--have them opened up.

Regards, and shoot safely,

Thanks all. I've considered shortening the barrels to go to straight cylinder bore, but will just ream out a couple of improved tubes.
