I have been wanting a 1858 44 cal. 5-1/2" I've just about decided on the cimmaron, but is the 40 or so dollar add on cost money well spent as compared to a peitta from cabelas? Read a little bit in the archives,it didn't help me narrow the choice between the two. Can anyone gice me a little nudge in a direction?

Tanz, Thats a fine set-up you put together. Nice group, too!

It is my understanding that Cimmaron requires better fit and finish, hence the extra $ passed on the buyer.

Tan, you probably just saved me a couple of months of fooling around. I just bought a Pietta 1858 Remington and I was wondering what to load it with. Thanks for sharing.

Let us know how the new pistol shoots.

Hey Tan, I shot the new to me Remington today. I had a lot of fun, but the pistol looks like it shoots about a foot low and left. I tried different powder charges from 20 to 35 and they all wound up low left. Could be me, but the last load was off a bench and still hit low left. I reckon I can file down the front sight for the vertical and I can bend the front sight some for the horizontal.

I didn't have all the foofaraw that you are supposed to use to shoot. All I had was powder, ball and caps. I shot 6 cylinders full and the cylinder started to get difficult to turn. So I quit and came back home.

35 grains of 3F really makes that bad boy roar.

BTW, where do you get a nipple wrench that will get the nipples out of the cylinder.

What ball diameter are you using?

As to fouling, six cylinders before getting stiff and no cleaning is not too bad. Are you using over the balls lube? Between cylinders, drop the latch and pull the pin forward, give it a wipe off with damp cloth and relube it with non-petroleum lube such as Crisco, unsalted lard or any natural lube. Or maybe try something along the line of Stumpy's moose snot concoction in a squeeze bottle with a nozzle, with muzzle up, give it a couple of squirts at the front cylinder/frame mating area while rotating cylinder.

If POI remains consistent, sounds like you are on the right track for sight adjustment.

Nipple wrenches from TOW, Possibles shop, Cabela's etc.

Most revolvers shoot high, so before you bend it outta whack, let a friend try it along side of you. If both of you do the same, then you'll know for sure that it's not you with a bad sight picture.

As far as wrenches, make sure that you tell them it's a 1858 New Model Army, as there are about 4 different sizes out there from wells fargo to Walker. Once you find the correct one, order another one right away, because just using one normally bends the ears just a micron every time you do it. So you're already starting to break it the first time that you use it  They only break completely when they know that you shot the revolver and you don't own a spare wrench! :youcrazy:

Have fun with that thing!

FWIW. Finally got back to where the load books are. The .38 Special load that worked well in the R&D conversion for my .36 Pietta New Police was the Lyman bullet noted above in my earlier post and 16 grs. fffg along with a 0.030 veg wad and a 1/16" wad of beeswax pressed into the case mouth before seating the bullet.
In addition, I had luck with a similar load using a 140gr. Cowboy style .357 bullet and two veg. wads with the wax between.

Tan, I was using a load of .451 balls that Mazo Kid sent me. I didn't use any wadding or lube, cause I didn't have any. I will be getting all the proper accoutrements now, but I just wanted to shoot the bad boy and see how the trigger pull was. I was also experimenting with the caps. I had some that needed to be squeezed just a bit and then others worked fine. The caps were about 15 years old, so I was surprised that they all worked without a single misfire.
