Your not wrong!!I use dehydrated Di-Hydrogen Monoxide. It's real easy to mix in the field and it's much easier to carry than the heavy water Britsmoothy uses.

Windshield washer fluid is just water blue dye and methanol.I have been using windshield washer fluid for barrel cleaning during a shoot with great results for years. 1 gallon of the blue stuff goes a long way.
Vinegar will remove bluing.I've read that the Windex with vinegar works even better, if you can find it. I just use plain old fashioned water.
Water will only dissolve one of the three components of black powder and probably none of the after effects of combustion (soot). What you are doing with the water is no more than when you wash sand off your feet after going to the beach.Water is a universal solvent ! it should surfice to clean a B.P. rifle?
