Are any of you guys concerned with the possibility of cook offs at all?

Nope.
That's because Black Hand stole my recipe for cookin' turkey.

He's got cause to worry though. I didn't write the name of the secret ingredient for the stuffing so he thinks you use Eggplant instead! Boy is his stuffing going to be weird! :rotf:

Ain't no way he's going to win the cook off!

Now, where did I put those wild mushrooms?

Oh.....He's not talking about the big North American Turkey Cookoff contest?....... He's talking about glowing embers?..........What the hell does that have to do with a cook off?
:rotf:

Well sir, you should be. I have seen the remnants in real life from a cook off on a real live but sad human being. No amount of talking will get him or his wife to touch another muzzleloading piece.

Well I don't have to swab between shots so I can load the ball,I do it to keep the condition of the bore consistent. I use my own formula of 1 part water,1 part murphys oil soap , 1 part water soluable oil , And I also try to use the same amount on every patch , some may not agree but most use what works for them.

That may well be, but if I worried about everything that everyone tells me I should worry about, I would be paralyzed with fear and do nothing. I refuse to live that way. If it happens to me, then you can tell me "I told you so!" You have my permission!

Hey Black Hand,
If you really want to get'em going, just say you blow down the barrel to keep from having a cookoff. That's like pouring gas on a fire.

It wouldn't get me a goin'! That is all I am gonna say. Let's just say my alternative practice from swabbing the barrel between shots keeps me from being paralyzed by fear.

Nylon brush every 2-3 shots. I find it breaks alot of stuff/gunk loose. Most stays in the brush which I tap against the shooting bench. I wouldn't use a brass brush as they are designed for complete pass through. Uncrichie.

Those of you who want to discuss the possibility of a cookoff, I believe there is a thread around here somewhere that was several pages long full of the argument. My intentions of this thread was not to discuss cookoffs. Though I do appreciate the concern.

Now, I believe in whiping the bore every time to maintain consistency. But, after further discussion with my brother, I believe there are other factors at play here. I believe it has something to do with my fathers cleaning methods. (My brother and his girlfriend let my dad clean the gun :cursing: )

It's a newfangled cleaning method using Hoppes 9 and Mobil 1 oil. I think it has something to do with why the gun fouled so quickly.

Someone has gotten petroium based oil in the barrel,a nd it mixxed with the brunt black powder to make sludge.

Take the barrel and run lots of hot soapy water thru it until patches come out clean. This should get most of the offending dead dinosaur oil out of it.

Before the barrel cools. Take a blob or T/C 1000+ bore butter and coat the inside of the barrel.

Next time out. Run a patch with some bore butter on it, down the barrel.

Pre-soak your patches in T/C 1000+ cleaning solvent.

Ive been doing this for over 15 years now, or as long as T/C has been making the stuff.

I can shoot OVER 50 shots in an afternoon, and NEVER wipe once.

If you use oil and synthetic lubes, then use alcohol to clean the barrel out. That will cut the oils and most synthetics. Then finish with soap and water on patches until they come clean. Then rinse out the soap with clean water. Then dry the barrel, and lube it for storage. I have a friend who is using Jet Engine Mobile One synthetic oil mixed 50/50 with WD40 in his barrels, and they are fine. He does run a patch with alcohol on it down the barrel to get out any congealed grease, before heading into the field or to the range.
