Got my new Uberti "Whitneyville Dragoon" the other day! I am impressed with the quality of the gun...at least as far as assembly, fit and finish go. Time will tell if the steel wears well...
I ain't got any balls to shoot out of it yet! grrr. I need to measure my chambers and see what size ball mould to get.
It is one massive S.O.B. I mean BIG. Four pounds of iron in one hand. Despite the incredible weight, it handles VERY well. Points well, hammer reach is very good. And the handle is actually long enough to get all my fingers on it!!! I can even (barely) do a Road Agent spin with it!
This was a VERY well designed gun, I think. I think it was made with hard use in mind. The ratchets on the back of the cylinder are HUGE, and inset inside the frame to protect them from crud. A very heavy duty gun overall.
This example has a VERY nice action as-is. Smooth, and with a surprisingly light and crisp trigger pull. There is virtually zero side-to-side play in the hammer. The space between the barrel and cylinder face are so close that you can barely see light through. Everything is fitted quite nicely, and it's hard to impress me on stuff like this. Very pretty. The only markings on the gun are the fairly well done Texas Ranger battle roll marking on the cylinder, and the "black powder only - etc." marking is on the bottom of the barrel, obscured by the loading lever, which is nice.
Got mine from Williams Sports www.williamssports.us They were the only ones I could find that even had this model in stock (most don't even carry it). I can definitely recommend both their service, and their pricing.
By the way, I believe the Dragoon takes a charge of up to 50 grains of black powder! (The Walker takes up to 60!!! I want a Walker too...)
Next is a Remington .44 ......
