A bunch of years ago, there used to be a show on PBS that showed how to do woodworking using antique tools such as adzes, scorps, augurs, shaves, gouges, sideaxes, etc. It seems that most of the techniques could be qualify for anytime prior to the 1940s. I can't remember the name of it, but I'd like to find old videos of it. Seems like some of the methods might be applicable to this hobby. I don't think it's even on the air anymore. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I do remember that it always started out with hammered dulicimer music and a fellow in turn of the century workmans clothes and an antique toolbox walking through a big city but somehow ending up in this old workshop in a barn in the countryside.

Its called the woodwright's shop, still on the air being aired here in the Seattle area, look em up on pbs.org, do a program search, they will ask for your zip and then you can see if your local station is airing it, just went there and checked and there advertising some of what is scheduled for the new 2008 season.

The Woodwright Shop comes out of N.Carolina, and much of the episodes have been reduced to books which are available from your local bookstores, or on-line dealers. There are several of the books out now. We get the episodes on our local PBS station, but I am seeing reruns now. I do believe they stopped making more shows.

Thanks guys. I checked PBS and that's it!! loved that show. It doesn't air here in phoenix, so I thought it had gone off the air. Gonna have to see if I can buy the videos now that I know the name again. I used to watch it with my Dad back in the 80s.

The fellow's name is Roy Underhill, and his books are WELL worth getting.

At one time I thought it would be really neat to have an old-timey wood working shoppe. Have given that up as I just plain don't have the room for my modern stuff and the hand/foot powered tools too. I used to enjoy that show and did tape a couple of episodes for future reference. It's not airing around here anymore either. Maybe someday???
