I have a few thick red wool blankets that really need to be used for something other than wool blankets. I would like to make a shirt for hunting and general outdoor use. I have zero sewing skills so Something simple but a little more challenging than a poncho. I have looked at the different paterns at ToW but not really sure what to try. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

Keep them as blankets and buy some thinner wool cloth. The cloth will make a far better shirt than a blanket any day.

For deer hunting I have completly outfitted myself in layers of wool. Fantastic stuff for keeping quiet and warm. So when I say shirt I guess I'm thinking jacket. Thanks for the ideas.

How about a Capote?http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/426/4/PATTERN-90
They are traditionaly made from wool blankets and are HC/PC for your area.

The Eagle View patterns are easy to use once ya figure out the sewing terminology they use.

I made the rocking horse shirt a cpl years ago, I really like it. The only thing I would change is maybe add a collar and make it a little longer so I have a little more insulation when sitting.

I have made two Capotes; one was basic hooded model, the second was my own tweak on a "NorWester", caped instead of hooded. I made it from an Early's of Whitney 6 point, so I had more n enough extra to make a hood I cld wear or stow.
The whole thing more often as not is "rectange construction", The only odd ball is the sleaves; cut them 3 to 5 inches longer than seems "needed", Worst case you can roll them up a bit, or down over the backs of yer hands while hunting. This latter aspect is REALLY nice.
The cape of a NorWester also helps keep heavy snow from seeping in and chillin ya.
If ya like, I can post pix of the capote, but the hood was lost on the road :(
