Wool wads

I’m going to be trying some wool wads with no excuses bullets in both a TC Renegade and a CVA Accura MR. Both are 50 caliber. Should I use 50 or 54 caliber wads (I’ve read both ways) and how do you attach them to bottom of bullets?

I have never shot wool wads with bullets but I just put them on top of the powder when I load my patched balls. I can't see any reason to attach them to your bullet. I do get more velocity and accuracy with a wool wad compared to just a patched ball in most of my rifles. I have one rifle that shoots poorly when I use a wool wad.

If you put them on the powder how can you be sure they’re lying flat and not turned edgewise in the seating process?

I use a .510 diameter by approximately 1/2 inch in length fiber wads over powder, not lubed. They seat straight every time no problem. I lube the patch for the ball.
I only shoot round ball.

I use cream of wheat. Cheaper and a good breakfast!

I use them when shooting Maxis, they reduce leading, and I can get the same accuracy by reducing the powder charge. I used to use 110gr of 2F in my Renegade and now with a wool wad, 95gr of 2F and it shoots to the same point of aim. I do smear a little mink oil lube on it to keep fouling soft.

In my 50 calibre rifles I use 54 calibre wads.

I use .54 wool wads in my .54, they are a tight fit to the bore and have to be shoved down with a .54 cleaning jag, it would be impossible to turn one sideways unless you started it down the bore that way.

I use oversized wads. Once you get them into the muzzle just make sure they’re square and then ram them down on the powder. They will not turn as they go down. Then seat the bullet as normal. The wad is never attached to the bullet.
