I've made char from both cloth and punk wood in old 35 mm film cans and also just over a fire. I try and find punk wood in larger slabs and put it over the fire. When it start to burn I smother it. Repeat until it's well burnt. With cloth over the fire I use thicker cloth in a long strip. I roll it up on a green stick (like tp) put it over the fire and when it starts to burn I smother it. If satisfied I cut it off and do it again. Film cans have a great seal but of course are not HC. Have a pin hole on the top , put the material in and watch the smoke. When done smoking take off the fire, plug the hole and let cool. You can also use the fungus that grows on birch trees un charred.
