Would your pipe be in your possibles bag?

I do not smoke but if I did, I think I would carry my pipe in my haversack and reserve my possibles bag for my shooting supplies only. It is obvious that the stem for this ppipe is meant to be replaced as needed and often the stem was something like cane or clay. A stem would be rather fragile and would most likely be carried wrapped in a bandana or other piece of protective cloth or buckskin in a haversack. Just my idea on the subject.

I think I would keep my pipe in my possibles bag and keep my shooting supplies in my shooting/hunting bag lol :stir:

My apologies. I think I was the one who was getting the thread off topic. That's what happens when your mentally challenged!

I have a little reed stem clay pipe I think I'm going to have to put together a little bag for it.

Just what I needed , more stuff I can't do without in the woods. lol

No one has mentioned it yet, but I find the biggest challenge in carrying a pipe to be keeping the tobacco from drying out too much. Leather is really good at sucking out the latent moisture, leaving you with really dry crumbles in as little as a day.

Maybe I'm expecting too much of the tobacco I use, but I'm still dinking around with beeswax in the leather and other brainstorms to protect the tobacco. So far nothing beats a small ziploc inside the pouch.

Anyone solve the riddle, or am I the only one bothered with how fast and thoroughly the tobacco dries out?

lol, that's exactly what I said. hahaha :slap:

I got a tin of mints from whole foods similar to an altoids tin but not quite as thick. The hinges in it are different and seem to be easier to seal up with some ticking and melted beeswax. I also melted a thin layer of wax in the lid, so it forms a seal with the tin when closed. Carries enough for 2 or 3 bowls and appears to be pretty airtight.

I have not had the chance to try it out yet but I think it will work.

Shows how carefully I read things, don't it! :rotf:

Thanks.

My current pouch is made from oiled/waxed leather (3-4 oz) and is a roll-up-and-tie affair with a deeper pouch and long flap, lots like the tobacco pouch you can buy in shops but without the plastic liner. Eh.... :td:

The Voyageurs carried their pipes in a "Gage d'amour" a small bag that they wore around their necks, or in their Toques. I don't smoke so I don't know how that would work.

I think they smoked plug or twist tobacco, maybe that kept better. I had some plug tobacco, it came from China and was pressed into a square about 1/2" thick and a foot square. To use it you took a knife and carved off some chips and put it in your pipe.

Many Klatch

I bought a cple twists from crazycrow.com and they stayed "fresh for a good long while. Maybe its the twist it's self? Dunno, but it worked.

Put a small slice of apple in the pouch. It keeps the tobacco moist. Just a little 1/2" square piece or equivalent will do. Replace when it puckers up dry.

Good suggestion. Thanks! :hatsoff:

For keeping pouch tobacco moist I use a hunk of Cuttle Bone.
It can be found at Pet stores, they hang a chunk in a bird cage and the bird uses it to sharpen it's beak.

It's a porus bone from the Cuttle fish, a couple drops of water and it stays moist for a few days.
It doesn't rot. http://www.google.com/search?q=Cud...74,d.aWM&fp=3725a230c1af26d4&biw=1024&bih=596
Cheap, you can get a big chunk for a few bucks

I made a tobacco bag out of leather, and coated the inside with a thin coat of clear silicone. I know it ain't PC, but it does seem to work, and no one knows what the inside of my bag loos like but me anyways.

Sounds real interesting to this non-PC kinda guy. What type of silicone did you use?

Penzance - I was under the impression that it was no longer being made.
Just now, however, I was able to order a half pound of it from Connecticut Valley Tobacco. We will see...if the order progresses.

I just bought "the last" 1/2 lb bag from my local store. The guy there said it's just a matter of when ever they send another shipment. So I am guessin it's still out there, but timing can get... sticky.

Couple of weeks ago I scored some Penzance from Iwan Ries pipe store in Chicago. They have a website and do a lot of mail order business. Probably the best pipe for smoking the good Balkan blends is a meerschaum, but they are expensive and fragile. graybeard
