Howdy!

For us renters, has anyone seen a sheet metal gun cabinet/safe tall enough for MLs? I have two sheet metal gunsafes for my cartridge rifles, but these safes stand 55" high, which is exactly the length of some of my flinters, so that doesn't really work, much less for a 62" fowler.

Maybe one could diagonally fit shorter longguns in the safe, but not more than a couple. And then it seems like the weight is unnaturally resting against the muzzle which worries me that it wouldn't be great for the stock.

I know sheet metal isn't break-in proof, but its better than nothing.
I'm googling around for ideas, and have seen some extra tall ones online, but most were the heavy, "permanant" kind. And some didn't list dimensions. Anyone in a similar situation? I'd like to hear what you bought. Thanks!

We just solved a similar problem for a friend of mine. He bought the Stack-on safe and the add-on pistol safe that screws on top of it. We just cut out the sheet metal between the rifle safe and the pistol safe and he had plenty of room for his tallest guns.

I'll probably have to do something similar also. I have a muzzleloading bench gun that won't fit my safe. I keep it sitting on top of it, but it got knocked off, breaking the hammer spur and cracking the stock (the thing weighs about 40 lbs!).

If you have an extra closet - swap out the door for a commercial steel door, lock, hindges & deadbolt - and use the closet. You can still use the balance of the closet for general storage. Check with some local builders who do commecial re-models and you may locate a set very cheap. Know what size and door swing you need. [email protected], Colorado Territory

I don't have one of these, but know several who do and they are satisfied. http://www.zanottiarmor.com/
The real up-side to these, IMHO, is that they come broken down and you put them together where you want them. There are also other mfrs.

I have a 6 ft tall, 41 gun Liberty safe that works well for my longrifles . . .

I have...had the same problem years ago and I still rent...I don't know if you're by a Kmart but they had a metal safe there for about a hundred bucks. It's pretty solid, doesn't take too long to put together and there is also nice shelf space in there to...check 'em out. Oh yeah, I don't work for Kmart

Thanks for some great ideas everyone. I'm going to look into all of them. :hatsoff:

I figured I couldn't be the only one who'd scratched their brainpan over this one.

I used a surplus gym locker - its not a safe but it is plenty tall, has a little shelf for misc stuff, and inexpensive. A good lock will keep it kid proof & slow down many thieves as they would make quite a racket to try to use a cold chisel on the hasp. I used a stud finder & a couple of good sized lag screws & fender washers to bolt it to the wall so it would not be carried off contents & all.
