If this is in the wrong place, please move it. I know it will probably go all directions knowing all the different sense of humors on this forum :rotf: but I have to ask. I was at a yard sale the other day and bought a mink stole (so I was told, I know the lady seller so I believe her) for $3.00, yes three and she said it belonged to her great aunt. It is about 18" wide and right at 80" long, has the hand sewn slick lining on the inside. So, with great hesitation, I ask and seek the wisdom of everyone. What can I make out of it that isn't going to look too girly :hmm: . I was thinking maybe a fur hat but is about all I can come up with. So come on guys give me some ideas or should I just try to trade it for something, maybe a tomahawk whatever. Have your fun and thanks for your ideas in advance that is if I get any :v ..........Harold

I have made a fur hat like the one that Franklin wore out of mink. I had an old mink coat and made up several of them. The mink is on the inside and wool is on the outside. Look up a pattern for a "Workman's Cap" It is made of four pieces of outside fabric and four on the inside. I made up a few for myself and my wife from Muskrat pelts and wool. They are almost too warm. The mink ones I gave away to women that were admiring them.

Mink mufflets are good gifts to the womenfolk as well. You know those fur bands that women can stick both hands into? I made one out of the two cuffs on the mink jacket that I cut up.

If the mink starts to come apart at the seams you can get some iron on Pellon (fabric stiffener) from JoAnn Fabrics and gently iron onto the skin side to reinforce the mink.

I have also seen a mink lap robe done the same way. It can be real nice on a chilly night around a campfire.

Ya you can find those old mink stoles sometimes for low dollars.
I've thought it would make a good outside trimm for leggins or pants.
Just a narrow maybe 1/2' strip down the outside

Tobacco pouch,,
Strike-a-light bag,,
collar/neck on a leather shirt,,
Neck knife sheath,,

Harold:

Use part of it for a coat collar, like on a capote....a shawl collar.

Well Harold, if you tie flies for fly-fishing, you just found yourself a lifetime supply of materials for tying fur nymphs. I used to buy "mink tails" for fly-tying specifically for tying them. That was back in the 70's and early 80's. Haven't seen them since.

Outside of that you should be able to make a nice bag with flap you can wear on your belt. If you want to get real carried away, use the head of the mink as the flap. I've seen that with muskrat and I'm sure you could do it with mink.

My ex-wife's mother used to buy those furs, and any other furs she found at the Good Will shops, and make Teddy Bears out of them. There are patterns available on the Internet. She used contrasting color furs on some to make very adorable Teddy bears, and sold them for way too low a price. She had customers who were on waiting lists to buy her bears. She was able to make use of a lot of "scraps" from other projects to make the bears. Very little fur was wasted.

If you don't want to download a pattern, simply buy an old stuffed bear at the same stores for a $1.00 or less, and take it apart to get your pattern pieces. You can buy old bears in several sizes, so you can make the best use of the furs you buy.

If you want to decide how to price these bears, shop in the high-end stores( or internet sites), to get an idea of what retailers are charging. Remember that your Bears will be made out of REAL Fur!

Well, if you lived in the cold country and had to use the outhouse very much (or even a cold, inside facility), you could have your own fur-lined toilet seat. :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

I just saw the Iceman, Oetzi, in Bolzano Italy this morning. he was wearing a fur hat with fur on when he died so a Fur hat wouldn't be too early. copper age reenacting anyone ??

Paul, it's strange that you shoudl mention that... my wife has one of those little bears made of mink scraps and done up in a cute little Zorro costume.

"Strange", "Odd", and "Eclectic", are words often used in the same sentence as my name, the last only when people are trying to be nice about it! :haha:

My former Mother-in-law never claimed that she was the first, or only one to make these teddy bears out of mink, and other furs. In fact, she got her patterns from some sewing shop years ago. What I thought was Unique about her " Bears" was that she used some tanned leather for the soles of the feet, giving a nice contrast to how the typical stuff bear is made.

Au Contrare, my friend. You can wear anything when hunting, PROVIDED that you cover it with enough Blaze Orange material! :rotf: :blah:
