Does anyone know of any youth model non-inline rifles, when i was a kid i had a scaled down long rifle, brass mounted .45 cal, that was imported by Navy arms, dang near shot the barrel out of it, well now i have a son who is 11 and I would like to get him involved in the black powder thing, but i am having a hard time locating a suitable rifle, thanks all

I'm not sure if they still make it but CVA had a bobcat youth model a few years back. Its a .50 cal percussion. Hope this helps.

Check this thread in the Hunting forum- Thread Here Has a bunch of responses to a similar question.

Short version- CVA Bobcat is an inexpensive non-inline that will get an 11 year old started off well.

BP where in idaho do you live ?
Im just up in payette area and i sometimes come across youth weapons or make them up for folks . it all depends on what you want and a price range .

there are a couple places that sell plans as well as builders kits

:)I have seen many kids shoot CVA hawken's with the butt sawed short for a munchkin. :winking:Some screwed a shotgun buttplate on. Some reapplied the brass original. When the rugrat grows up, there is allways someone else looking for such a gun for his kid. :hmm: The problem I see is old Pa won't use only 30 gr, he still loads 75 gr. and the kid don't take to that. :(

Hey there Captchee, I live in the south eastern part of the state, Preston, north end of Cache Valley, As for the rifle I would spend 3 or 400 if I could get a nice rifle that my son and eventually my daughter could use. I have never been real fond of the CVA rifles but if that is my only real option then I will look at them closer. I you happen to run across one email my offsite, [email protected]

Oh man, this thread brought back a memory. In the late 90's I was new to muzzleloading and found that my favorite gun shop in Wabash, IN was shutting down. They had a huge inventory of T/C muzzleloaders, most were new but had been in the shop for years. Prowling the racks one Saturday I found two .36 Senecas. One had an absolutely gorgeous stock...this from someone that rarely notices the wood in a gunstock. The other next to it looked rather plain. I picked up the beauty, but try as I might I couldn't get my face positioned on the stock to line up the sights. I picked up the plain jane Seneca and had no problem. Kept going back & forth between the two until I realized the beauty was a youth model with shortened dimensions. Reluctantly I bought the plain jane and wondered what I was getting into. Think I paid around $300 for it. If I'd had kids, the beauty would've went too. The plain jane was actually a very good looking gun and is one of my most prized firearms...it was just plain compared to the other one.

This thread got me wondering what happened to the 'looker'. Hope some kid not only gets to shoot it but realizes how lucky he is. If this were a proper world, that gun would stay in a family for generations. T/C made some gorgeous guns back when that thing was made. Sure wish they'd bring the small bores back.

Please pardon the long ramblin' post that does nothing to answer the original question.

I still have the .45 Hopkins and Allen underhammer "Buggy Rifle" that my Dad gave me as a kid. He had bought it with a broken stock, so he taught me how to make my own.

As the only left-handed shooter in a family of 11, it was pretty cool.

Just recently purchased a CVA Youth Hunter for my 11 year old daughter for around $135.00. Its accurate with just 40 grains of Black Mag 3 and prb. My only gripe is it only comes in a .50. Seems like a .36 or .45 would be better suited for starting out. :imo:

Keep an open eye for old CVA .36 cal rifles. I found one 3 years ago at auction arms and a lefthand .32 last year. The righthand guns may even accept the smaller cal barrels, I haven't checked yet.

i will do that .
i have a stock for a small plains rifle now as well as all the brass but have not got around to finding a lock suitable.
I also know of a Morgan right now in 45 cal and polished brash breach area and a 4 PPP but stock and fore grip,,,, very good shape I seem to recall it has a moruku barrel ???
It is however a hammer style IE if your not familiar with this design it has a hammer like a 30 30 lever action and not a side lock
I bet you could get it for around 250.00 if he doesn

Hey there Captchee, shoot sounds like a lot of fun, I would like to be put on your mailing list, I should be able to round up something to wear, I still have a couple of shirts and a few other things, I will talk to my Dad about it also, he started the club here in cache valley back in the early 70's but he hasnt been involved with them for years, I'm sure they would like to find a good shoot and have some fun. I have found a couple of the youth hunter models for sale from a couple of different souce's on the net, probably new old stock, they want about 130.00 for them new is that reasonable? Oh, my address, Jerry Douglass 191 N 200 E preston Id. 83263

My 12-year-old handles his CVA Youth Hunter just fine with 50 grains 3f (it's .50 cal) and PRB. He hits as well as can be expected. Easy to clean and maintain, too.
