Like I mentioned on the topic dealing with copper sulfate, my son gave me a powder horn kit for Christmas. It's one of the ""Missouri River" kits with a plain, white/brown horn about 9 3/4" long.

Having never really made a powder horn, I did a lot of reading on our forum and on several places on the web so I wouldn't end up really messing it up.
(Thanks all you folks who have written about making powder horns. )

Anyway, when it comes to art, I'm doing good to draw a stick figure so I knew I wouldn't be making any of the fancy horns I've seen in other posts.

I did do some scrimshaw figuring it wouldn't look any worse than some 18th century kid would do out behind the woodshed with his pocket knife.

All in all, I think that kid (and I) would kinda like it now that it's done.

A hint for those who don't recognize what I scratched:
It is a horse out on the plains and there is a rain storm over the mountains. :rotf:

I like it....
The lack of professional artistry often seen on many horns, makes it seem more authentic.... :hatsoff:

P.S. If you're looking for a nice strap I now this girl from Ohio that makes nice ones....

Hate to say this, but your drawing, since it has perspective, is a a bit more sophisticated than almost all originals I've seen!

I like it & think you & that 18th century kid did good. :rotf:

and I can personally recommend the strapstress(I know it's not a real word) Clyde mentioned.

That's a nice horn, Zonie, I like it.

The shaping work (architecture?) on the horn is really nice, and your scrimshaw work is just primitive enough to look authentic.

Your son gave you the kit...and you've done well with it. :hatsoff:

I like it. its not complicated or too over the top, just a really nice looking horn.

I think it looks just fine. The art can't be too bad because I got the horse on the plains with rainstorm right, and I don't even have my glasses on!!! Well, I might have thought for just second that it was a horse in the desert during a nuke test.

Thanks to all for the nice compliments.

The shoe repair shop I visited didn't have Fieblings leather dye in brown so I bought a bottle of "Lincoln Quality Shoe Dressing".

I don't know how it compares with Fieblings but it seemed to do a fair job.
