Since I got some nice comments about my Pedersoli stock refinish, I'm sharing with the forum world my stock finishing secret weapon:

SHOE POLISH

Before and after pics of my SMR butt stock to show shoe polish results:

Was that the only thing you put on the stock?
No, the stock was first finished with stain then several applications of tung oil. I don't put wax on until the final oil application has cured. Using shoe polish instead of paste wax tends to make the colors "pop" as well as give it a little more depth and more sheen without making it too shiny.

Anybody EVER see a deer scared and run from the "shine" on a gun barrel or a stock? ;)
That’s funny, let’s just say I try and keep my deer as close as possible and I dont want any chance of spooking them whatsoever. Maybe I’m being over cautious, but I have kept the practices of a bow hunter even while hunting with my BP rifles. No reflections and blending in with nature equals a good hunting season. You can hunt however you want

I've seen gun barrels shining in the distance on a sunny day. If I can see the movement a deer can for sure. It's the movement that spooks animals. They may not run away but you can bet they'll be long gone by the time you get there.
Or they will simply avoid the area altogether. A mature deer around my area is a smart deer, smart deer seem to see subtle abnormalities in their environment, it’s like they have a sixth sense at times. Keeping a dull firearm and blending in with the environment through playing the wind, scent control and blending in as well as you can, is how I hunt.

It also keeps moisture out. I use it as well.

Notice much odor to that polish when the stock is on your cheek? I recall shoe polish having a faint fuel-like smell. Was happy when work boots went suede.

I think a finish that can be easily freshened up is a good thing.
Americans have moved in the other direction for a long time, unlike the Brits.
