Interesting often-repeated lore is that the Indians would not trade for a gun that didn't have the serpent [ Example Link ].

I haven't found a reputable historical record of that, but have heard it all my life.

ETA We always thought it was a dragon.

I just love em !! I'd love to see more folks building a N.W. for themselves . Firearms are so darn expensive .I dont see how folks, esp. folks that have a family , can afford these guns and rifles . I like to tell folks to collect a part at a time over months or a year . Spread that expense out over time ...
That’s what I would like to do for a trade gun but don’t know where to start. Is there a specific parts list that you can point me/us to?

Rob can guide you through this.
Look at Track of the Wolf online catalog. Their trade gun kit has a parts list, better yet buy their trade gun drawing and you can make your own list.

First .... What type of gun ? NW trade gun ? Fusil de Chasse ? Other ? Then ... Is there a specific companies kit you like ? If so thats easy , you just buy a part from there parts list every few months until you have all the parts .... If a scratch build is what ya want then startcollecting the parts and then look for a slab of walnut or cherry for the stock . I'll tell ya the measurements etc. I usually have 35-50 bucks in the wood ...precarved stocks are stupid expensive but there's a lot of work in those stocks . It can be done though and save a ship load of $ . If you choose a NW gun , holler at me and I can send you an awesome build manual for free via an email address. Love that manual . Helped me to start building NW guns . got patterns in it too so you can build the parts

48" that's my style!:thumb:

Actually, I like em all!
I made me a longer barreled one , now I need a short barreled one !! One with one of those 100 yr. old. 24 ga. barrels , 26" long ! Plus ! My N dfy Ken gave me an original Oct. to round barrel out of her s collection of barrels ! Its probably a late barrel 1840s or 50s but its got "LONDON " stamped on top , and this one is genuine ! So I gotta make me a N.W. gun with it too ! Its at 36" now but ....that ole muzzle is thin in spots , hate too but probably take her down an inch ....have my buddy do it on the lathe if I have too .
