Article showing details of original rifle including
the forward barrel lug. "The lug must be L-shaped, because no barrel pin is visible on the outer surface of the stock."

I can't figure out how this works without a pin, or how "L-shaped" looks

for article, Google "Eli Nup rifle"

Hi,
It is very simple. The lugs are "L" or hook shaped and the hook slides over the wooden stock at the back of the mortise. You can see where he cut the wood down a little to thin the web and allow the hook to slide over the wood. This is a very clever but poor way to anchor a barrel IMO.
