Barrel lug

I can't figure out how this works without a pin, or how "L-shaped" looks

From what I see here: https://korns.org/gunsmiths/Eli-Nup-9292024/Eli-Nup-9292024.html it states the RR pipes are pinned in.

Hi,
It is very simple. The lugs are "L" or hook shaped and the hook slides over the wooden stock at the back of the mortise. You can see where he cut the wood down a little to thin the web and allow the hook to slide over the wood. This is a very clever but poor way to anchor a barrel IMO.

OK, now I kind of visualize it. Why not just pin the lugs with crosspin, as the ramrod pipes are done? strange
