For many years in Australia there was a war between the butter makers and the margarine manufacturers, with heavy advertising and more about the dangers of butter, then the ban on commercial mixing of the two was lifted and various’’spreads’’ hit the market.
And a very good patch lubricant was born, and a versatile one at that, as you spread the bread for your sandwiches for the range it’s a simple matter to take a dollop or two of spread to add to the patch lube tin.
Just don’t get caught.

I know that there are as many patch lubes for muzzleloaders out there as there are members. Last night, I started thinking about if there was some form of water soluable patch lube that could be tried for use in muzzleloaders.
I thought that it might make cleanup between shots easier that fat or grease based lubes. The idea of using water-based personal lubes popped into my mind as an option.
I have not tried any product nor searched the forum for any previous posts. Thought that I would throw the idea out there to see what you all think.
Maybe you need to visit one of those erotic supply stores and see what they have to offer. 😄

Here's the Artificial Intelligence answer to the question. I've been having fun asking Google questions just to see what kind of wisdom it comes up with.

You can use a variety of personal lubricants for muzzleloader patches, including:
  • Bear grease
Frontier's Bear Grease is a popular choice for lubricating muzzleloader patches.
  • Altoids tin
You can use an Altoids tin, a heat gun, and your preferred muzzleloader lube to quickly lube a large number of patches.
You should avoid using gun oil on a muzzleloader, as muzzleloaders don't have the sealed cartridges that protect the propellant powder from oil in other firearms.
When firing with round balls, you should use cotton or linen patches. You don't need patches when using shot or conical bullets.

Any of you ever try bear grease for a personal lubricant???? It reminds me of that old joke about what you have to do to become a real Alaskan.

Sometimes my brain works overtime. I thought that because it is water soluble it might make barrel cleaning easier. I knew that I was going to get some interesting responses.

I use the same thing I’ve used for the last 60+ years. Water soluble machine oil. 50/50 mix with water. Works great for me. I guess you could add more water but the 50/50 works. And a easy clean up.

One summer, I did a lot of lube testing. I was surprised to find whale oil was the worst, creating hard fouling in few shots, and was hard to clean. Two of the better ones were Goop hand cleaner, and Vasoline hand lotion. Moose Milk was tops in the testing.

I mix Simple Green and water 50/50. Patch lube for matches and for cleaning when I'm all done.
You guys are getting off topic here. :)
