Hello all!

I just purchased my first musket from Veteran Arms. It is a 1768 Charleville. I noticed a seam along the rear of the barrel. Is this an issue? I am not sure it is just a poor finish or a genuine crack. Thoughts welcome! Thanks!

It is where the breechplug is screwed into the barrel. Not the best finishing but probably not a problem.
It also looks like there might be a crack in the tang, but that isn't a problem.

Yes, that's where the breech plug meets the barrel. You could remove the barrel and do some draw filing on there to make it less visible. Looks like some was already done, but very poorly done and not enough. Draw filing will also take care of what I'm thinking is a casting defect line (not a crack) across the tang further back. Anyway, doing that will reveal whether it's just a surface defect or really a crack. If it's a crack, I think it should be replaced.

I'd send it back.
If you decide to keep it.......
Please check the bore Diameter to see if it is the correct diameter/caliber for a 1768 Charleville. (.69 caliber)
ALSO, check the inside of the bore for smoothness.
The musket I got from them was like a washboard. So rough that I couldn't get a .600 dia ball even close to going down the bore. (It measured out at .585) Had to ream it out to .631 and it still has some loose spots in it. Will need to have it relined.
Good luck.

I checked the barrel and it is dead smooth. I dropped a .625 ball and it dropped dead to the bottom, no problem with that.

You can do a little light peening with a ball peen hammer on the gap and close it off, then draw file it smooth. Light peening is just that, just about the weight of the hammer falling, nothing more.
