    Jimbo's Underhammer

Choosing the Barrel 4 Still haven't ordered the barrel yet. I'm having trouble finding a custom barrel maker who will break with tradition and make a fast-twist .54. I tried Orion Rifle Barrel Company but their Phone number no longer works. I called the Oregon Rifle Barrels, but haven't...

    New to Smoothbores

I'm thinking about ordering a .62 smoothbore for my underhammer and would like to hunt turkey with it in PA. The shot size is limited to #4 lead and smaller. Is it possible to work up an effective load in this cal? My turkey experience thus far has been with a Browning flattop 12 with 2 3/4...

American Pioneer Powder vs 777 vs BlackMag'3

I'm fortunate to have 2 stores within driving distance that stock Goex BP. I recently bought 3 lbs. of FFF. I also have half a lb. of FFFF, which should be a lifetime supply of priming powder for my flinter. I had more trouble finding BM3 - finally bought some in VA on my way back from a...

Anybody ever used Old English Scratch Cover to touch up a "ding" in a stock after a hunting trip. I don't have any guns with really nice wood -YET. But is works nicely on the run-of-the-mill production stuff. Jimbo

    Mounting scope on HOPKINS/ALLEN .36

I'm having an underhammer built and am having problems figuring out what to do about a scope. You can see the details in the thread I started in the builder's bench section entitled: Jimbo's Underhammer I would like to hunt with an action-mounted peep sight, but would also like the ability...

    Jimbo's Underhammer

Choosing the Barrel 3 I talked to Dave tonight and we're going to explore ordering a barrel blank and finishing it ourselve. Since we're not tied to the Green Mountain octagon, we might look for a .54 fast-twist, tapered round blank. We'd blue it, because we think that would look the...

    Jimbo's Underhammer

Choosing the Barrel 2 Dave and I were originally going to order a Green Mountain IBS blued fast-twist .54 barrel. I took my Renegade apart to get a better look. What I like about the GM IBS barrels are that they are completely finished at a price of $265 for stainless and $185 for Blued...

    New Hopkins & Allen

FW, Please refer to my thread in the Builder's Bench section called: Jimbo's Underhammer Dave, my gunsmith, and I have decided to order a barrel blank and finish it ourselves. He's going to call some barrel-makers that he deals with. After he does that, I'll call you and we can compare...

    Jimbo's Underhammer

Choosing the Action 3 I received my action from Blue Grouse today. Actually, the return address on the package was Deer Creek Products, the manufacturer. I took it to Dave after work today. It has some rough spots and will need some polishing. Dave wants to wait on the case-hardening until...

Slamfire, Thanks for the idea. I'm thinking that if the ghost ring is used for hunting with the aperture removed combined with a fluorescent front sight like the Williams on the Green Mountain barrels, it might make this application better for dusk or dawn hunting. Maybe even use a...

    New Hopkins & Allen

FW, I'll try on my end to locate sombody. I, like you, want the fast twist. I shoot all the PRB I want to out of my Renegade flinter. I'd like to get into some long range target shooting. From what I understand, the 1:66 will shoot short conicals OK, but just don't have enough spin to...

    New Hopkins & Allen

Coyote Joe, Thanks for your patience. I took my Renegade apart to look at the barrel more closely. What I like about the GM IBS barrels are that they are completely finished at a price of $265 for stainless and $185 for Blued. They have a fast-twist .54 that doesn't seem to be...

    New Hopkins & Allen

Coyote, The IBS barrels have all the drawbacks you mentioned and I'm not crazy about the sights. The reason I'm leaning this direction is that I have 10 thumbs and no gunsmithing abilities. I'd have to pay for the barrel and then pay to have it finished (dovetails, thimbles, sights, etc)...

    Range Box Target Storage Hack

Static, Tell your family to check out the Cavalier Gun Club. It's about halfway between Goochland and Montpelier. It has covered ranges with bench rests, silhouette targets, a private fishing lake, sporting clays, and just about any type of shooting. This sounds like a rich man's club...

    Jimbo's Underhammer

Bald Mountain Man and Crackstock, Theres another underhammer thread in the percussion section: New Hopkins & Allen The first post clears up some misinformation I previously posted here. Blue Grouse's supplier for the H&A kits and parts is Deer Creek, NOT Numrich (Egunparts). It also...

    New Hopkins & Allen

Coyote Joe, I'm going to use a Green Mountain IBS Barrel on the underhammer I'm having built. (See my thread in the builders bench section.) Jimbo's Underhammer I'm having a custom stock built with a long forend to look something like this: Since they're drop-ins for TC Renegades...

    Jimbo's Underhammer

Bald Mtn Man, I'm not going the custom barrel route. I'm going to order one of the Green Mountain IBS barrels. They're pre-manufactured. I'll call them and see If I can get one without the rear dovetail, but have my doubts about whether they will do that. Jimbo

    Jimbo's Underhammer

FW, I agree about the scope mount. I may need to forget the scope I have and find one with a longer eye relief to get the mount on the barrel where it belongs. Thanks for pointing that out. It also confirms that I should wait until the rifle is completed before making these decisions...

    Jimbo's Underhammer

Choosing the Sights 1 The Green Mountain barrels come with Williams Firesights. I have similar sights on my Omega, although I have never used them. I put a scope on it without quick detach mounts (big mistake) and never wanted to take it off and re-zero the rifle, so I never tried the open...
