Just finished my first Hawken .54!!!

Finally got to shoot it yesterday. Shot great! Big boom the first time and every time... I tweaked around with different amounts of powder and seemed to do best with 75gr. FF Goex. I had a 10 shot pattern in a 2 in ragged hole @ 25yards. Not bad for me. Thanks again for your kind comments...

Just finished my first Hawken .54!!!

I polished the brass just like normal, cleaned it with degreaser and treated it with Birchwood-Casey's Brass Black. It took 2-3 coats to get it to the desired finish. It has held up well, so far.

Made a nifty range box last weekend!

This pic was taken before the harware was installed. I installed a brass carry handle on the lid and a draw latch on the front panel to lock it.

Just finished my first Hawken .54!!!

I used a medium rasp to get the rough shape I wanted. Then started working it down through progressively finer grit sandpaper. 150/220/400/600. At 400 grit, I started "whiskering" until no more grain could be felt and then finished it up with 600... The finish is nothing more than tung oil...

I just happened to have a metric / SAE thread gauge in my shop. That darned thing is handy!

No worries Ohio, I ain't goin' into business... I found one like it online and couldn't bring myself to pay the $169 they were askin' for it. I think I MIGHT have $30 in materials in it. :v

Whoops! Just read the notice: "This area is for discussing the use of Shooting Accessories. Posts related to making equipment, should be placed in "The Craftsman"." Mods move as you see fit...

Picked up some nice looking poplar and planed it down to 3/8" and slapped togethr a couple of drawers. Looks like it might work out well for trips to the range.

    Newb from West Tennessee!!!

I'm new to black powder but not firearms. Just getting into traditional BP and this looked like a good place to stop by and hang out for a while. I look forward to getting to know you all and learning more about this really fun hobbie!
