Funky Powder

I worked on an archaeological dig with my uncle at Ft. Boykin in Virginia many years ago. Our main excavation was the well which had been filled in when the fort was abandoned near the end of the civil war. We recovered a lot of 32 pound cannonballs that still had their wooden fuze plugs and...

    Bought 2 more T/C's

Got a small enough light down the bore and no it is not coned, just pitted real bad, some of them craters you could get a truck stuck in. It is a 45 cal. I did shoot it once at a steel plate at 40 yards, with 50 grains of 2f behind a 440 PRB, it hit center but low, got a jar of JB bore paste on...

    Bought 2 more T/C's

Thanks, I think you are right, still barrel looks real bad, I will continue to clean it, then shoot and see how it goes.

    Bought 2 more T/C's

Not familiar with that, is that like a counterbore? Do you know of any sources for a rear sight for the hawken?

    Bought 2 more T/C's

Went back to same shop I got the Jager and Dixie 32 and drug these two home  Both need a little work, the Cherokee barrel is history, shot and put up wet, no lands or grooves left in the first inch or so of the barrel. The 50 Hawken is in better shape, rear sight is missing, but already...

    Half stock 32 caliber rifle

I am pretty sure it is not the original front sight.

    Half stock 32 caliber rifle

Thanks for the kind words, yeah the front sight is just wrong wrong wrong, I measured the dovetail and it shows to be 1/4 inch, most of the replacement I see are 3/8, anyone know a source for a 1/4 inch dovetail front sight?

    Picked up a Jager

Question about the nipple on this rifle, it seems to be of a small diameter, smaller than a #10 cap, I can squeeze down a number 10 and it kinda fits if you know what I mean. Did they use a smaller diameter cap back in the day or is this nipple just wore out? [/img]

    Half stock 32 caliber rifle

Thanks to all, I agree it sure looks like an older DGW that has had a couple of mods in its life. My friend owns the store where I bought this, they mostly deal in evil black guns. He bought someone out and got 30 or so long guns and some handguns all in one deal. I paid him what he had in them...

    Picked up a Jager

This is the only mark I could find, looks like an alignment mark to me, also a pic of the backside of the lock. [/img] [/img]

    Half stock 32 caliber rifle

I bought this one at the same time as the Jager, like it there are no maker marks or proofs anywhere I can find. Looks to be a well made rifle but kind of a mystery. There was some rust in the barrel but seems to be cleaning up fine, the trigger is really nice, the nipple was missing when I got...

    Picked up a Jager

There are no proofs, unless they are under the barrel maybe, I have read about some Jagers with no markings but I don't know much on the subject.

    Picked up a Jager

Got this at a local shop, engraving is pretty nice, but wondering about the age of this rifle. It looks old but then again not super old if that makes any sense. There are no maker marks on it anywhere I can find, no proofs, nothin. Bore is 50 caliber and it looks decent and shootable, any way...

Sounds like a good day, what range do you shoot on? I grew up in Rogers and live a bit farther south now
