favorite 54 cal rifle load for deer?

I have shot 3F in my 54 for the past 15 years, both hunting, target practicing, even competitively. Never saw a problem, never had anything happen to my rifling, never had a drop in accuracy. Think this is an old tale, better left there. As long as you have reasonable loads(regardless of...

favorite 54 cal rifle load for deer?

same load as roundball, except I cast my balls to 527; I find that my Colerain barrel eats those better. When I use my GP, (redone with an L&R lock and Davis triggers), I can use 535's but find that for hunting I am better off with 530's.

    Hatfield Rifles

good to hear both sides; I know that at Cains muzzleloading shop, the current version of Mt. State Muzzleloading, has one on the wall and they have a lot of stories about it. Most of their problems dealt with the guy who made the guns, not necessarily the gun. Unless something has changed, I...

    OK you French gun experts!

Can't claim to be an expert, but I have a fusil de chasse, walnut stock, with the Tule lock from Track of the Wolf; my hunting partner has a type d with the same lock. Never had any problem with them, and I think they look correct for the gun and time period. I didn't know L&R made a lock that...

    Anybody use Dura Flints?

maybe I am remembering the wrong rocks; some guy came through one of our reinactments selling these guaranteed lifetime things for about $15 a pop. Those ate frizzens. Everyone I knew who bought one tossed it out.

    lyman great plains models?

having the frizzen hardened will help; something I never quite got good at. I'm not sure how long it would hold, if a long time that's great. Those L&R replacement frizzens seem to work forever, never had a problem with any of them. That's why I suggested it. Try it as is for a spell, but if...

    Anybody use Dura Flints?

If those are those super expensive rocks that are supposed to last almost forever, I have not but I have seen two guys try them. Each of them ended up replacing a frizzen because the flint ate it up in short order. One of them resembled a canoe, without bow or stern. I would avoid them if...

    lyman great plains models?

had some work to do; but that was before L&R came out with locks designed to fit right in. I chose that one because it was closest to a Hawken, in my research, by looks anyway. And, the GP looks closer to what I have seen in pictures of Hawkens, so it seemed like the right thing to do. But...

    lyman great plains models?

I have a GPR in flint, and it was actually my first flintlock; shoots extremely well, has taken a lot of game, and won some contests as well. The only problem I had with it was the lock, and I did convert it from the lock that came on it to an Ashmore from L&R. Made it a much better gun, very...

    how far is too far

I'm not near as scientific as most of you guys, and I have a tough time judging distances-so I find a general rule keeps me in line...if the front sight blade covers up the target, it's too far cause I can't be as accurate as I need to be. Of course, on cans and targets, that's a whole nuther...

    Cheap BP cleaning solution

Haven't tried that one, but I have tried a lot of ideas and have one word of caution-be careful that what you use will not harm the stock's finish if you happen to get some on it. Found out the hard way about Windex!!!! Didn't treat my stock well at all. I just use rubbing alcohol anymore, or...

    70 grains strong enough?

Using a wad is a new idea to me! after all these years shooting these things, I never thought of it and never heard of it. I stopped at 85g of 3F in my 54, cause it seemed to eat that better...but now I think I might try that wad idea. Thanks, Roundball, for something I didn't know about til...

    vent liner question

Did the same thing with my Lancaster; had a vent liner in it and too many flashes in the pan. Drilled it just a tiny bit more and no more problems. Now, when I change liners on any of my flinters I open them up just a tad. Can't recall the size of the bit, but I keep it hanging on my workbench...

    Pedersoli Brown Bess? Opinions?

Tommy, I wondered if that was you...Gotta remember, the Bess worked well but you still have to settle you nerves! actually, I just stumbled into this board, never knew it existed. But, the motto remains the same.."Flintlocks, Flyrods, and Firewater" :)

    flintlock shooting tips?

Brand new to this board, but I've been shooting these things for about 20 years, both rifles and smoothbores. I had a problem pulling to the right (shooting right handed, which I must do because I am cross-oriented). A friend gave me a tip I can pass along. When you grip the gun with your left...

    Pedersoli Brown Bess? Opinions?

Just finished a two day reinactment (Rev War) and my Pedersoli Bess fired 200 rounds without a misfire. I'm not sure about the authenticity of all of it, but it is a workhorse that won't fail me. :m2c:
