    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

Hey all, Drilling the vent is the last thing on my list of things to do I just marked the end of the breech plug and it's possible relation to the liner on the outside of the barrel long ago. I was kind of stuck because the lock area was already pre-inlet. The round circle in the pan area...

    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

Hey Mo, I was wondering about that myself. Upon thinking about it, I think the line protrudes into the barrel and you just file off the excess flush with the inside of the barrel. The cone I believe is oversize so to speak. I could be and probably am totally wrong however. f

    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

Well I measured again and got my barrel pinned to the under lugs finally. Had to do the toothpick trick. It doesn’t look too bad and I hope after I stain it no one will notice. We’ll see and if it really sticks out I’ll do an inlay to hide. It. Oh I replaced the underlugs with brass ones...

    .50cal Great Plains Load?

Just wondering what you all use for a load for your Lyman GP Rifles. What size ball/patch combo works the best? fosters

    I missed, Arrgh!

Ya Keith I would have prefered that as being an option myself. Still can't figure out how I hit one perfect, and just barely grazed the other 2. Trust me Mitch, whatever I do it is going to be simple. :) Well I guess I'll toothpick my holes for now and see how that looks. Might try dying the...

    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

Hey Keith, It's a Rice barrel. My thought was just as you mentioned, filing both the tang and the wood at the rear of the tang to finish the shape and match the curve of the stock. To my greenhorn eye their seems to be quite alot of mass there on the tang. You think I can take it down...

    I missed, Arrgh!

Inlay is a great idea guys! Tb, Nice work! I wish I knew how to engrave even close to that. One thing I do know is that I have the artistic talent of a 1 year old. :) I've started working on an idea, will solve both problems maybe. 1 was my still tick loose underlug and 2 my missed holes...

    I missed, Arrgh!

Thanks all. I really appreciate the suggestions and support. I knew these were going to be a problem for me so I was so careful on measuring marking etc. and I still missed! That's the depressing part. I only drilled from one side so that's a plus. I wish I knew that trick about keeping the...

    I missed, Arrgh!

Hey J.D. Nah, I was just coming in from one side to mark the underlug. Than I was going to pull the barrel drill the hole in the lug and continue. You think if I drill the hole in the underlugs just above the area where I nicked them with the drill bit the bit will find the hole in...

    I missed, Arrgh!

Hey Fred, Thankfully I just marked the underlugs so they are fine. It is the holes in the stock that are off. Racking my brain trying to paint my way out of this corner. As mentioned I think most people just glue in a toothpick and re-drill. I'd prefer to try and use the same holes in...

    I missed, Arrgh!

Unfortunately it's cherry. My fear is if I plug it and try and drill again I may miss again, then I would have two holes in the wrong place. What if I drilled the holes in the underlugs just above where I nicked them. Wouldn't the drill find the hole in the underlug? They are pretty...

    I missed, Arrgh!

Well I missed my underlugs while drilling for my pins. I'm sure it was because I wasn't holding my drill level or my bit wandered. I grazed the bottom of 2 and hit one actually a little high. The high one shouldn't be a problem the two low ones make me depressed.:( Any ideas on a fix? fosters

Need Your Opinions on a New Build

Like Black Hand, I seem to be a fullstock guy. One thought I had though was you may want to google David Price Flintlocks. He builds what he calls a Lightweight New England Rifle, which is a half stock. It is kind of cool. I may have to purchase his component set one day. I like the...

    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

Yup, got it. I've actually been researching this project for a couple years now. I have 4 books and 3 DVDs. Money well spent, and you are 100% right on how lucky we are to have this help here. Great people and I certainly appreciate their insight. I try not to bore them. They are a great...

    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

Oh hey pd, if you are having trouble seeing the transfer of the inletting black you might try lipstick. Works great and probably no more messy than the black. Personally I tried to find a shade that matched the cherry of the stock. :) f

    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

I'm pretty sure that it will close up when I drop the tail of the tang down a little more. It actually looks worse in the pict due to the shadow. I actually have a 10"x 2" piece of cherry that came with the component set. I think they included it just in case I wanted to make a wooden...

    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

Nah J.D. I'm just slow. Mike, I knew I saved the saw dust and the piece I cut off to inlet the buttplate for something. I'm hoping when I rebend the tang so of it might go away. Also maybe when I stain and seal the stock? f

Yup put a draft on all the parts. I got you now what you meant by the "walls." Off to the bench. f

    Progress so far. Thoughts, problems?

ok, got it. just need clarification on one thing you said though. What did you mean by "don't follow the walls of the existing mortise." I promise this is the last question til I mess something else up. f
