Once again, I'm writing to ask for opinions for the planning stage of a smoothbore build.

I'm trying to build a very light smoothbore for one of our club members. She has recently become attached to flintlock shooting, and In a fit of insanity I told her that I would build something that she can shoot. She is a very small statured woman, and can with difficulty, shoot my 36 inch Tulle. So I need something smaller and lighter than that.

Another club member donated a walnut stock blank but it's short. I can get a Northstar 30 inch 20 gauge barrel and inlet it, but the barrel will extend beyond the forearm. Kind of like an Hawken. Is this something that's worth doing? or should I just order a Long blank from TOTW and do a full stock?

If I use the original walnut stock, what lock and butt configurations would look best? I've included a photo of the stock with a 30 inch piece of PVC Pipe in place of the barrel.

Thanks all again for your wisdom and support. I really appreciate this forum.

When you said half stock I was thinking maybe something in an English sporting gun pattern as it would be comfortable to shoot but...

I don't know that I would build a light 20 on that blank. Too me it looks like too much drop and the rake of the comb will be a check kisser.

But I could be wrong. Enjoy, J.D.

Like Black Hand, I seem to be a fullstock guy. One thought I had though was you may want to google David Price Flintlocks. He builds what he calls a Lightweight New England Rifle, which is a half stock. It is kind of cool. I may have to purchase his component set one day. I like the interchanging barrel idea. Sometimes the grouse hunting is better than the deer hunting and vise versa.

Oh, and his guns are just plain awesome to look at.

food for thought
