    Nipple Shields

I have a shield and mine is angled. I got it from TotW. I turn the "high" side in towards the barrel which allows me to cap from the side with my capper.

What am I doing wrong (Cleaning)

I pulled out my caliper and measured my .45 caliber jag. I've got it filed down to .38 at the top, .39 in the middle, and .40 at the bottom. Works good.

    CVA Nipples?

My rifle is .45 caliber thus the .440 ball. Slapping the side of rifle after pouring in the powder always helps getting some powder into the drum. The main thing that helps me is snapping a cap in between shots whether not you run a patch between shots. I've turned down my jag quite a bit but...

    CVA Nipples?

I don't hunt, but before I shoot I run a patch with bore cleaner on it to clean out residual oils. Then dry patches 'til they're dry. I fire a couple of caps next with the muzzle close to the ground to see dirt move. Usually I push my nipple pick through the nipple to make sure there isn't...

    CVA Nipples?

I have a .45 CVA Kentucky and I had problems you describe. I found the original nipple that came with the kit works the best. I replaced it not long after I started shooting with a new nipple and I started having problems. It turned out the new nipple was "taller" than the original and the...

    Boy have I got questions

Before you load the first time pop off a couple of caps. Hold the barrel down at the ground close to some loose dirt or stray leaves. You should see the dirt(or leaf) blow away from the barrel when you pop a cap. This proves the channel is clear. When you load make sure that the hammer is at...

    Photos Of My GGGrandfathers Rifle

We don't know for sure but I suspect not. Since it was converted to caplock a new lock mortise would be needed and also the barrel was shortened. It was used a lot. The wood in the area around the nipple is eroded away. I really like the way they repaired the stock. They took the time to...

Was there many hawken style rifle's floating around in the 1860's

See my post in the photo section.

    Photos Of My GGGrandfathers Rifle

I'm not too good at these picture things but here goes. This rifle has a H. Deringer barrel half octagonal half round. It's approximately .50 cal. and exactly 36" long. I believe it started out life as a flintlock around 1820 then converted to caplock in the 1860's with a patent...

    Wet patch between shots?

I shoot with Lehigh Valley Lube with good results. I usually just run a dry patch between shots to pull out excess fouling.

    FF in a 45?

Mike, my barrel twist is 1:66. I use .440 patched round balls.

    FF in a 45?

Being a newcomer to black powder shooting I looked at the instruction book that came with my CVA .45 and it said to use 2F(no mention of 3F). So I've been shooting 2F(about 55grains worth) and it's been working really well. From what I've learned on this forum and other books, I believe I...

Yeah I saw the blunderbuss too! :)

    Black Rough Bore

I know I'm talking about pistols but these issues are more of a general nature. That said here goes. I "rescued" a pair of pistols from my brother-in-law. These pistols have brass(or bronze) barrels, when I got them and check the bores they were black. I've cleaned them time and time again...

    Black powder storage for sailors

Would they have used lead lined kegs? I think the ship's gunners mates measured out bulk powder into empty cannon cartridge bags. When required to fire the cannon the powder boys would run these to the cannon crews.

    Pirates of Caribbean

Yep I say the wheellock at the "Bretheren Court". The little short guy had it. Think I saw a dog lock too.

    Pirates of Caribbean

Okay everbody you've got to go out and watch the latest Pirates movie if for nothing other than to look at all the pistols. I've never seen so many pistols in one movie!

    Favorite movies set before 1840

Don't forget Waterloo with Christopher Plummer and Rod Steiger. I know its not pre-1840 but the flintlocks in the turkey shoot in Sargent York looked old enough.

    Quigley Down Under

I wish I had the movie on DVD in order to pause it. Those rifles looked like muzzleloaders though I couldn't tell for sure. This movie has an interesting mix of weapons. One of Marsten's guys had an Enfield rifled musket(at least it looked like one). Another one had what looked like an...

    Quigley Down Under

Just got through watching the movie again. I was wondering, what was the rifle the British soldiers were carrying? Kind of looked like a baker rifle.
