    TRS M1800 . 54 Rifle Arrives!

I was attempting to use humor to agree with Dan. I don't believe there was any "new" or "unproven" technology in the 1803 rifle.

    TRS M1800 . 54 Rifle Arrives!

Dan, I might have to disagree with you here. There are just too many primary sources documenting the disastrous results of the new guns automatically switching their setting from "stun" to "kill".

    Belgian Made Trade Gun?

I saw this for sale a couple months ago or so. They wanted $650, so they're beginning to realize it's not as much as they'd like. Some of these are kinda neat looking, but the sellers always seem to overestimate their value. However, if people keep buying them.....

    New guy with old gun

I was about to post just about exactly the same thing Ron just did. The lockplate and stampings are what Flayderman shows to be a Whitney 1798 contract pattern Type III. What does the rest of the gun look like? Are the barrel and stock still full-length?

    1803 Harper's ferry

Some of the Italian repros are .58, but not all. My Euroarms is .54.

    canteen

My new favorite canteen is one I made from a gourd. I personally used a small amount of sand to clean out the inside, but gravel would be a better choice, as it is easier to remove. After I knocked out the seeds and other guts, I used a double boiler arrangement to heat up some beeswax. This...

    trade gun in TX?

The lock and serpent sideplate of a British trade musket were dug at San Jacinto. Apparently, there was at least one in Texas.

    What is a "musket"?

What's even more confusing is that the terminology wasn't used consistently. You can't necessarily read "rifled musket" and assume it began life as a smoothbore and vice versa. I've seen this before in original writings.

    Opinions on Middlesex Trading

There's a link to a page with a description (no photos) just under the graphic of the sailing ship on their website.

1803 Harpers Ferry - RE Davis Replacemnt Lock

Thanks, Bob! The information and the photos really do help. I appreciate your efforts in getting all that on here to answer my question.

    1803 Harpers Ferry Rifle?

Aw, come on! You weren't supposed to take that so seriously! I was referring to the bit that says "those who own copies of the 1803..." which does actually apply to me. I had plenty of whuppin's when I was young, but I also developed a sense of humor somewhere along the way, and I hope you...

    1853 Enfield Re-barrel

If you buy a new barrel, how much would you want for the old one?

    1803 Harpers Ferry Rifle?

That's a bunch of manure. I own an 1803 copy and am interested in the L&C debate only because it's interesting and involves research. I have no intention of reenacting L&C stuff. However, I do on occasion attend Texas Revolution events, and we do know that this weapon was in Texas in 1835-36...

    Gourd water containers

I grew some this year, and planted them kinda late so I didn't get to pick 'em until probably October or November. Most are all pretty much dried out already.

    Percussion Besses in Civil War?

New Land Pattern muskets built in 1815 would have been less than 80 years old. It cannot be forgotten that the Bess was the standard British infantry weapon until the 1839 Pattern musket entered service, and I'm sure the transition didn't occur overnight. There are accounts here and there...

    GET IT RIGHT!!

I thought the History Channel only ran shows on gadgets and blue collar workers with tough and/or dangerous jobs? Are we talking about the same History Channel?

    Lewis & Clark Rifle Found?

"Serial number 15"? Were any other US arms marked with serial numbers in 1800?

    An oringial 1792 Springfield

What do you think of Flayderman's assertion that there is no model of 1808 and that the arms produced by Springfield and Harper's Ferry at the same time are essentially two different types of musket?

    Building Matchlock smoothbore

I have to say, that's a really beautiful gun. That stock is just gorgeous. I love the color and the contours.
