Paul are you describing something like HootAl's freestyle pistol(See Link)? I do like this one. http://www.midiowa.com/hootalrifleshop/Photos.htm

You have an interesting question. Being left handed and blind in the left eye I have to shoot righthanded. However I find I can shoot a pistol equally well with either hand. I have considered building a pistol with a lock on the left side so it could be cocked with the lefthand since it would...

Appropriate lock for a southern moutnain rifle

Ken I'll sure be asking Steve about them. As I mentioned on ALR I messed up the inlet on my sideplate and need some ideas for a slightly larger plate to cover up my mistake. A few pictures would help.I'm sure he will have some ideas.

Appropriate lock for a southern moutnain rifle

Sean I'll definately look for those books. I have been away from muzzloaders for over 20 yrs(took a sidetrip into centerfires) and just coming back to it, so have a lot to learn. I am in Bookies shop every Wednesday night. He is teaching me to build.

    Pinning Ferrule to Ramrod

It seems I missed a line in your post where you specified cross grain? I do like you idea of using copper wire, it would be plenty strong and softer to peen than brass.

    Pinning Ferrule to Ramrod

Would it be wise to put your pin in across the grain? I would think if it is not the pin might split the rod?

Appropriate lock for a southern moutnain rifle

If my original answer that Chambers also offered a Mountain lock, was percieved as an attack. I apologize. My intent was never to be argumentive.

Appropriate lock for a southern moutnain rifle

Cooner your probably right about the Hatfield being a modern interpretation. But I understand Ted Hatfield copied his grandfathers rifle? I have to admit I never saw it but got my information from an article in Muzzleloader Mag off the net.

    Carving anxiety?

Thats good advice to draw it on walk away and if it looks good when you come back. And your satisfied with the drawing start working on it. I have seen enough of your work on this site to believe you will do a fine job.

    Converting Lyman Great Plains

An idea why Lyman does not sell a .45? I recently quit my second job selling firearms in Walmarts Sporting Goods Department for 6 yrs. We never carried anything but .50 cal. because market studies showed that .50 cal accounted for 70% of all muzzleloaders sold. Of course my being different, I am...

    counter sinking screws

I pretty much agree with Zonie on this. I curently only have two counter sinks. 1 is a 5 cutter Irwin. I have to slow my drill press way down to prevent chatter with tis one. I also have a single cutter I have fitted with a small file handle and use it by hand primarily for deburing holes. On...

Appropriate lock for a southern moutnain rifle

It would seem that Chambers agrees since he does offer a Siler Mountain lock. Since it has all Siler parts in it it would surely be reliable. I am using a new Hatfield lock(got a deal I could'nt pass up) on my early East Tennesee and it is rather pointy on the tail, but Hatfield considered it...

    stock finish

I have not used lemon oil on a stock. I did use it for banding on a workbench and can think of no reason it would hurt a gunstock. As far as it's durability especially in an outdoors envoirnment I know nothing since that bench has been in my garage shop since completed6 yrs ago(I just wipe on...

New Underhammer build by 11 year old

Kool! You can never tell where those skills learned young will take someone. You just might be training a rocket scientist/engineer, or a gal who does not need to wait for a man to fix things around the house. Either way she will be ahead of the pack for it. Keep us posted on this project, it...

    Staked or Dovetailed?

First off, I'll admit I have never used a swamped barrel yet. I like the staked staples. But heres a thought, why not either use the Staked or dovetailed on the front and rear where the barrel is thicker and solder the one where the barrel is thin? I would think the two end ones would have to...

    T/C "Patriot" pistol

Thanks Zonie! I'll be done with my rifle in a month or so and need to get stuff for the next project. This is just what I had in mind.

    T/C "Patriot" pistol

Zonie: Thats a fine piece! Since I need a target pistol, how about a few details? That looks just like wahat I had pictured in my mind!

    T/C "Patriot" pistol

If the stock is in good enough condidtion to use as a pattern the most economic solution might be to glue it back together. Then carve a new stock in native wood. I suspect with shipping/tarrifs and firearms regulations on imports in your country. Ordering a factory stock from the states would...
