    Building a Manton V-Pan Lock

I have always loved the looks of the famous Manton V-Pan lock but have never been able to find one. I recently built one from castings provided by The Rifle Shoppe, and I put together a web page detailing all of the assembly steps and showing some useful tricks for lock building in general...

    .22 cal

Use Crossman Premier pellets, or if you want more 'stopping power', Ein Jung makes heavy 32gr pelltes, kind of like a .22 short slug. You can get these at Mac-1 airguns. Mac-1 Airguns

What a Manton fowler cost in 1815

I am in the process of building a Manton V-pan lock based on John Manton's 1815 patent. Reputedly, it was the fastest flintlock ever made and was very popular for a few years until Manton stopped all flintlock production in 1825. I was able to find an excellent book about the Mantons and this...

The best way to temper a mainspring

Yes, I have acutally tested it with both large and small springs. Before this, I have never been able to successfully temper thin springs without breaking at least one, but this solved the problem. Although I have not used a lead bath, if I were to do so, I would overheat at least 5# of lead...

    Brechloading flintlock pistol tests!

The Dreyse is what is known as a tap-loader. Unfortunately, it only works well with short ball+powder lengths. The mechanism is still used for some custom airguns.

    Brechloading flintlock pistol tests!

The weather here finally broke and I was able to do the first tests on my breech-loading flintlock pistol. All I can say is WOW! The results are here: Breechloading]http://www.ctmuzzleloaders.com/mlexperiments/breechml/breechml]Breechloading flintlock pistol[/url]

    Breechloading flintlock pistol

No, I'm not doing anything commercial with the pistol; I just did it as an educational 'fun' project. If anyone else wants to produce them, they have my blessings.

    Breechloading flintlock pistol

I have completed constructing and proof-tested a breechloading flintlock pistol. The weather here is too bad for me to complete chronographing and accuracy testing, but I have put up a web page describing its design and construction. It looks like it will be a fun piece to shoot... Pistol web...

    extreme appoligy, but

Simple - 1/3 Murphy's Oil Soap, 1/3 plain water, 1/3 anhydrous (99%) isopropanol (that's rubbing alcohol without the water). This gives you the same percentage of solids as Lehigh Valley Lube (and works identically as far as I can tell..). Peroxide does nothing whatsoever, and it spontaneously...

    cap and ball pistol

With my Rodgers & Spencer .44, I use 25 grains of Swiss 3FG, and then fill the cylinders to within 1/4" of the top with corn meal or Cream of Wheat. I then seat the balls flush and finish with a bead of WL around the ball, dispensed from a glue syringe. The corn meal acts as an inert filler and...
