    Char Cloth

   Dunno, my kids are just about growed up and I don't have any diapers laying around to use for a tinder nest! Greg

    Char Cloth

The best cloth I have found lately for char cloth is the all-cotton gun patches they sell at Wal-Mart - the kind that looks like it might have been meant to be a diaper. Catches all over the place with just one whack of the steel and you have to stomp on that stuff to put it out. Greg

    Horn Strap

I tied the three pairs of strands (my strap has six strands on each end too) in square knots through the butt staple. The forward strands weren't long enough to go around the horn, so I tied them through/under the strap that goes around the neck and holds my powder measure and plug. Probably...

    TVM Early Virginia

I sure am happy with my TVM Virginia rifle with custom touches! (Toni - I've had it for 14 months - 771 rounds, 15 flashes in the pan and that's less than 2% and they were my fault, it fires fine in rain and high wind, the finish still almost looks like when it was new and that's with being...

    I have sinned, forgive me?

I guess I did that particular "sin" today too. I had the kids with me at the range today, while I was squintin' and tryin' to punch holes in 3x5 cards 50 yards away - too few holes in most of them, but finally got three in a row and called it quits. While I was making smoke, they...

    T V M GRAND

Gemoke, There's some photos of Matt Avance's work on this thread http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/ubbthr...mp;page=0#99727 My TVM "early Virginia" has a number of features of the Grand Rifle. I am very happy, especially with the workmanship and durability of the finish. When I talk about...

    Civil War article

Hi Rex, Does the version in your area have the reenactor period-type image on the cover? My newstand one does ... anyone know who this is? I believe it might be Rob Hodge, who started out in my old unit (4th Ky Inf CSA). Regards, Greg

Knifemakers - now I GOT poured pewter!

Rich, Thanks for the comments. I must confess I didn't make the blade; it was made for me by a friend at the blacksmith's shop in Caesar's Creek Village, Ohio. I reckon he tempered it; he was the blacksmith and I just used what he made for me! Thanks for the tips on the sheath! Regards, Greg

    My TVM Confusion

Hi Moss, It's a standard Virginia with some tweaking. The Grand Rifle was too fancy for my taste. Tweaking on this one: Colerain swamped barrel P wood (I didn't want a lot of curl) Wood patchbox Beveled sideplate and toeplate Silver thumbpiece inlay Incise carving (no relief carving except...

Knifemakers - now I GOT poured pewter!

Here's the result of my earlier post about "got poured pewter..." this is my first knife! 9" blade forged/ground from an old file - I don't know what kind of steel it is, but it holds an edge well and it's sharper than it looks :winking: It has a rectangular tang pinned with two brass pins I...

Beautiful! I hope to try hornmaking one of these days, and I'll be happy if I can produce something half that good! What did you use for a scrimshaw tool? Greg

12 Pdr Mountain Howitzer on Antiques Roadshow

Anyone catch the mountain howitzer barrel on Antiques Roadshow last night? (before you watched the Tar Heels whup them Yankees in basketball, that is) I believe the show was in Reno. The feller had dug it up in his yard and didn't know what it was, till he finally realized it was a cannon...
