    Steel for handgonnes?

Have often wondered about the use of bronze... in the case of early Japanese matchlocks... could the lock really be made from bronze? Found several suppliers of bronze material and when looking at the specs it appears to be pretty strong stuff.

handy sized matchlock WALL gun (?for tree stand?)

I missed that... after looking closer you can see the edge on the serpentine where the fracture occurred. Would like to have watched the construction of the barrel... I am sure it was a bear to create.

handy sized matchlock WALL gun (?for tree stand?)

The style (shape) looks like it may have come from India. Looking at the serpentine, it makes me wonder if this may have been made up as a display piece. There appears to be no way to hold the match...

    The Japanese Matchlock

Arilar,... I ordered mine a few days ago and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive. I received the same type of response from Mr. Sugawa. It looks like the English version is the same as the Volume-1 Japanese version. I wonder what the Volume-2 Japanese version contains? I had been searching...

    Chronographs

I have had an F-1 for over 10 years and it works fine. They are sensitive to direct sunlight and need to be shaded... never thought of the box idea, I draped mine with an old hand towel. I understand the newer models have improved. A good little tool when you are working up loads, be it...

    Black English Flints

It's in Sanford... south on highway 1... about a 45 minute drive. They own the property that the club is located on. They have a fairly large membership but most of the folks belong so they just can have a place to shoot when they want to. Have a skeet, pistol, and covered 25-200 meter...

    India matchlock guns

Just received my copy of "Firearms Of the Islamic World" and it has some beautiful works of art in it. The guns are from the Tareq Rajab Museum in Kuwait. There are a couple of critical reviews about the author but in my opinion the book is worth having if you are interested in Middle Eastern...

    Black English Flints

When I lived in Raleigh I belonged to the San Lee Gun Club. I would usually have the place to my self on week days. Makes for a great way to spend an afternoon.

leather powder flask for fur trade?

I saw the same auction and wondered the same thing... I have an antique bullet pouch with a pewter neck and tapered wood stopper made from a soft leather. I am sure leather powder flasks existed but I would think that they would be larger than 6" in length.

    The Japanese Matchlock

I have been gathering information on Japanese matchlocks and have found very little available. Thanks to Chuck Thom's assistance he helped me with some data. I have located Shigeo Sugawa's web page which has some information. I am looking forward to your future posts on this subject...

    Walnut Stock Finish

Indications are that some early English firearms were varnished with a varnish that had a red cast to it. Alkanet root was used to obtain the red color (best be boiled in the linseed oil). Have read where a few use Pilkington brand stain (Brownells) to achieve a color. Others fill the stock...

    Your opinion about this book

Makes sense... never tried it with BP... have heard of folks using it in ML Rifles... I use it to fire form brass.

    Your opinion about this book

Well, need to know which brand of "Colt Navy" you have. The difference between the ball and conical is the shape and accuracy of each one. Normally the conical is more accurate. The ball will elongate when it is forced into the cylinder and as it passes through the forcing cone of the barrel...

    Your opinion about this book

The choice was a good beginners book. One that I recommend is "The Black Powder Handgun" by Fadala which is no longer in print. I have included a link that lists it as a used book. http://www.bestwebbuys.com/Black_Powder_Handgun-ISBN_0910676224.html?isrc=b-search It was published in 1981 but...

    Underhammer Action?

Muzzleloader Builders Supply, in Arkansas has a nice underhammer action parts set for about $60.00. I ordered one from them for a future project. The castings are clean and crisp. The nice thing about the action is that you can set it up for a removable barrel system. They have a great...

    Pre measured main charge

I recall reading a how-to article in either "Muzzleloader" or "Muzzle Blasts" using river cane for premeasured charges. A cork plug was used to keep the container closed and a wire band was used on each end of the cane container to keep it from accidently splitting.
