Gun building on the decline ?

I can relate, I'm on the farm my people came to in 1860. I started my first build 2 years ago, life placed before me a challenging road right after I started the build. I am now working on it again and still hope to get a deer with it this year. Mike is right and you can do it. I went to an...

Working from a log, first attempt

I'm glad you got some wood from that tree. We had a cherry log laying on the ground with the bark off on the farm where I grew up, laid for at least 6 years before we took it to a band-mill, which were just coming in around here. It was a large diameter and the sapwood was bad, but after all...

New work on an old project.

"Going slowly now...don't want to mess this up any more than I have." Yep, you have completely screwed it up Dave. Humility is a virtue, but you needn't hide your light under a bushel. Wonderful work and thanks for sharing. Of course you could just send it my direction, I think it would...

    Powder shelf life?

Powder came, the FFg is in plastic "cans", which I have a prejudice against, maybe they are made of a stable plastic that doesn't degrade over time, but I'll be using it and keeping the FFg I already had that is in the metal cans for my insurance policy. The FFFg and FFFFg are in metal. I have...

    Powder shelf life?

Good news, I will be getting the package this week, the Goex FFFg was now in stock. Thanks for letting me know that BP is stable enough to store.

Fun with Nitric Acid (Staining Curly Maple)

Do you use straight household ammonia or is it diluted?

    Powder shelf life?

Well the point is moot for now. My supplier shows no Goex FFF til after 1 Sept sometime.

    Powder shelf life?

Thanks everyone, I want to have some extra on hand just in case, and you have helped me make that decision.

    Powder shelf life?

I tried the search, but didn't find the answer... how long will BP keep if stored in the original can?

L&R replacment locks for flint conversion

I replaced a Traditions flint with an L&R flint. Some minor trimming of the mortice was required, as was some file work on the sear.

L&R American Classic vs Chambers Deluxe Siler

Even as a newbie, I can confirm that the Siler is the better lock. That said, I put an L&R RPL in a Traditions gun as it is a fairly easy swap and while I have no experience with Lymans, Crazy Horse, I think you you will be pleased with the huge difference you will notice with your L&R RPL, for...

    Long barrels ?

I have quite a list of builds I intend to do that are 48" or longer, pushing 2 dozen. I favor the longer guns and there are quite a few really nice, architecturally, guns shown in RCA I & II, Kindig's book, and The Kentucky Rifles and Pistols book that are long barreled. The problem is the wait...

    Ramin ramrods?

Sounds like you would be able to 'ram' it 'in', but not be able to pull it out once it breaks

    Barrel Maker

Hello, may I ask what the specifics would be for a milling machine that would be capable of producing a swamped barrel up to 54" long? Also, what sort of lathe/boring set-up would you need to bore barrels up to that length? Thanks

    Trade Secrets

I came to this forum not too long ago and without the benefit of any idea of what I was doing. I have bought the recommended books and I read everything I can from the experienced builders. I have no need to disagree with anyone and am thankful that those who have been doing this take the time...

    Cherry ramrod?

Just my opinion having been using wood forever, no to the cherry. You need the flex of ash or hickory

    Sign Your Work?

I have been wondering this myself. My plan is to put my initials on the barrel in the same location as where the AF is on an original. To paraphrase an earlier funny- just so no one thinks Andrew Fichthorn built it. :rotf:

    Hickory source

I haven't finished my first rifle build, but I have done a lot of handle making from tree to finish. For a ramrod it would best to take the seasoned wood split to a square just larger than the desired ram-rod size, then pull it through a steel plate that has a hole drilled the size you want the...

2f better than 3f in flintlock

There would be more surface area available for ignition with the smaller granulation and ignition should be quicker with the smaller granulation because of that alone, it seems to me. But I've been wrong before :hmm:
