    250 grain r.e.a.l. bullet

I just cast a bunch of .50 320 grain REALs myself and had some similar questions.. a. it's designed to sit right ontop of your powder load (well, so Lee says), hence the whole ease of loading thing. WILL I get bad leading that way? How can we prevent that? b. I've taken a liking to American...

    Paper cartridge & rifles

Thanks for the info guys. I'll give it a try with some mid-grade paper Ive been using in my Bess. It's stiff but not very thick, and twists nicely without tearing which helps a lot in cartridge making. I think with a generous amount of paper behind the ball compressed against my power charge...

    Paper cartridge & rifles

Hey all; just curious about using paper cartridges with a .50cal Kentucky or similar rifles, say, instead of the normal patch & ball. Im not sure on whether this was ever used historically or what, or how popular paper patches are anyway. Pitch in any thoughts! Thanks.

    BP and substitutes

Heh I'll just chip in briefly; I'm one of those where 4F in the pan sets off 'the subs' perfectly well. From what I've read, 5-10% of your overall charge (say 5-10 grains per 100 grain charge) is what makes up a good duplex load with BP.

    Casting big bullets

Last night I made my first batch of 50 cal round ball and r.e.a.l. bullets last night from a Lee mold. Fantastic mold they make. Like you said, 3-4 fills to get a good result, then the next 50 were great. I found I needed a wet sponge to occasional cool the mold down but it didn't really slow...

Flint size for a Traditions Kentucky

Are those 5/8" square flints? Just from the few posts I've read and what ToTW recommends for Traditions / Pedersoli Kentuckys, I either want a 5/8x5/8" or a 1/2x5/8". My rifle is on delivery, so I might just wait till it arrives and check out a local retailer here that provides historical...

Need a Lee Mold - .490 Round Ball

I was going to say the same! I just ordered my .490 ball and .500 R.E.A.L. combo mold for my traditions Kentucky 50cal. from eBay last week.

    Most accurate flintlock rifle caliber?

At what range does a 50 cal round ball become more of a bruising hazard than a lethal projectile? :blah:

Flint size for a Traditions Kentucky

Title says it all! Im sourcing parts/gear for a Traditions Kentucky rifle and was wondering what the most common flint size is for these. Probaby going with TotW with an English flint, but do let me know whatever is recommended. Thanks again guys.

    Canadian Flintlock Source

Checking out Dixie Gun Works, I don't see anythign specifically saying they will not ship flint's to Canada, although on a few specific items such as pistols, caplocks and pistol kits they are stated as such. Makes sense as these items don't fall under the less strict 'antique' laws here and...

Very helpful links guys, thanks you! These are some of the retailers that don't normally raise their heads from typical internet searches :P

So i tried some Black MZ powder

This is a thread I'll keep an eye on. After my so-far excellent experience with APP, my more recent internet digging tells me that this Black MZ is everything that APP has that is good, plus moisture resistance & more POWER! Keep us informed with any new info you can, thanks!

    Canadian Flintlock Source

Hey all, So far Ive had really good experiences with vendors like Track of the Wolf and Possibles Shop, and will continue to do so. What I'm interested in are vendors that will actually ship flintlock long guns / rifles, either from the US or here in Canada. Cabela's has the Kentucky which I...

    New Bess owner, Ontario Canada

Hey guys, I've been reading for awhile and already posting a few questions / observations, everything around here is very helpful, I'm glad I found the site. In June at the Battle of Stoney Creek reenactment I made a semi-impulse Brown Bess (India pattern) purchase, and have been VERY happy...

    Best Round Ball Mold

Hey guys, lots of excellent info here! I have a 'traditional' scissor mold for my Bess that, while it works, is far from perfect. Advertised as .71" on track the wolf it actually measures out to .69 / .685 (not that round.. ;) ) I've been looking for a good solid .735 mold and Lyman seems to...

    American Pioneer Powder & Flintlocks

I'll try to make note of any performance changes over time, although I can't make any kind of scientific observation as I'm shooting recreational without a crono or set target distances. I did just test APP in my pan, and it definitely is not reliable in the lock, as myself and most other folks...

    Pyrodex triple 7 BP Substitute

I haven't owned mine long enough to try cold weather shooting, but 2 weeks ago during our 37°C 100% humidity, 4Fg Goex in the pan and 1Fg Goex BP in the main charge failed 25% of the time.. and when it did go off liquid powder residue dripped from the barrel!! I posted a video of ignition with...

    American Pioneer Powder & Flintlocks

I didn't notice a significant difference between shooting regular BP and the APP in my bess, but yes I'll agree generally there is a bit of a delay. I've seen a few instances where it's more of a "click...Fzz... BOOM!" with Pyrodex, where this is the more proverbial 'ka-BOOM' you expect from a...

    Pyrodex triple 7 BP Substitute

Allow me to toss a wrench into some of the gears here. Yes, subs WILL work (and work well) in a flintlock, particularly the larger ones like Bess', reliably and consistently. I myself use APP in my Bess with no failures at all yet. Trick is to prime the pan with Goes FFFFg. I've watched...

    American Pioneer Powder & Flintlocks

Woohoo successfully edited down a video for you all. I hope you can forgive our lack of proper facilities but we were perfectly safe & about 5km from the nearest sign of humanity. This is I think the 8th shot we took that day hand loading APP (about 90 grains) and a .71 lead ball with cotton...
