For those who can't get real BP or only a small amount, how much BP would you need in a flintlock to reliably set off the main charge of 777 or pyrodex? Naturally the pan is always charged with BP.

I think GOEX is mainly talking about some of the powders we don't discuss here. The kind that wasn't successfully produced until the end of the 1800's.

As for using a "starting" load of real black powder in a flintlock, Pyrodex suggests that 5 grains under a reduced load of Pyrodex will work.

IMO, it depends on the gun

There needs to be enough real black powder loaded first to cover the vent hole. After the vent is covered the rest can be Pyrodex (or whatever kind of synthetic black powder suits a person), the rest of the powder is just insurance.

IMO, no flintlock should need over 10 grains of real black powder to get the phony stuff going.

It definitely seems to vary. Sometimes somebody will even mention that their particular flintlock runs on some particular substitute with real black in the pan only, although it's not always clear what their standards for speed or reliability is.

But if you're just trying to get some idea how many shots you can get out of a pound, figure 5 grains + the pan charge as an average. Otherwise start around 5 and play with it as needed. If you get something you can't set off even a little pushed down the touchhole will rescue you.

When I switched from cap to flint, I tried the recommended 5grns Goex 3F...immediately found it a PITA to try and measure only 5grns, and that it was unreliable reaching the vent.
Switched to 20grns because It was the smallest powder measure I had and never looked back..,used up 8-10 lbs of Pyrodex that way, excellent accuracy, etc.

Heh I'll just chip in briefly; I'm one of those where 4F in the pan sets off 'the subs' perfectly well.

From what I've read, 5-10% of your overall charge (say 5-10 grains per 100 grain charge) is what makes up a good duplex load with BP.
