    novice deerhunter querys

A lot to learn but then that is part of the enjoyment. The best ground blind you can have starts with a good pair of rose nippers or a hawk. Just build the blind right where you need to be at that moment. A few clipped off branches with a stump or tree to your back is all it takes. Just break up...

the fuzzy sights and old eyes

It may be a "sin" to scope a side lock but it is a far, far greater sin to wound and potentially loose an animal in the name of Historical Correctness. Snow

Okay, I've picked up a Renegade...

Yep, I called Green Mountain about a drop in barrel. After the guy on the phone stopped laughing he said GM never built a left hand drop in... :cursing: Snow

It be a left hand version. Would anyone know of an old lefty barrel I can have bored out to 16 gauge? Snow

the fuzzy sights and old eyes

Homesteader is dead on. I had lasik at 45, the first thing the surgeon said was "I can fix your long vision but I can't change the fact you're 45.." Today I can see the Born to Fly tatoo on a 'skeeter's rump at 100 yards but I can't read a newspaper, at least with the left eye I'm nearly blind...

    The Bears of Blue River

"Balser", Bowser was the goofy guy in Sha Na Na... :rotf: I'll have to find a copy, it has been a loooong time. What was the author's name? Snow

    The Bears of Blue River

I grew up in Indianapolis. My 5th grade teacher read it to us way back in 1965. I think the main character was named Bowser. In the early 70's we use to deer hunt on the Blue River near Edinburg then they put in Intersate 65 through the middle of that farm and we never hunted there again. :( Snow

I'm not familiar with a "Lee Shavers long range insert". What does one look like? Snow

Squirrel Rifle and larger caliber flintlock.

Last june, at Friendship, I picked up a .58 Numrich underhammer barrel. I also have a Lee .575/500 minie mold. The two mixed with 90 grains of FF and I am finding a suprisingly accurate big bore. I was originally thinking elk but now maybe mastadons :haha:! It is a shallow groove, fast ROT...

    Just ordered another TVM

I'm 6'5" and can flat palm an 8'ceiling standing in my bare feet...most standard LOP are just too short. Snow

Hanshi, I've cash in hand! As long as you order it left-handed and with a 15" LOP... :rotf: :rotf: Snow

    New leman flint from TVM

Nathan, your taste in arms and mine are very close indeed, I even think the lock is on the correct side. I particularly like the dark stain of that pretty maple stock. Much better than the reddish tones Matt seems to use so often. You have shot and owned other Lemans how do you like the stock...

I found my pet load - but why?

Very true, less powder and more shot will produce consistantly tighter patterns. Another thought, if you are using 2- 1/2" felt wads try using one perhaps cut it in half. Two half inch wads is a lot of mass, with a heavy charge you're pushing the wads through the shot charge and distorting the...

    which to choose ?????

Personally I'd opt for the Beretta in .20 or even .28. I know thats no help to the question... :hmm: Go with the over/under in .12 and scour the used classifieds for the flint smoothie you want. You will find a wider choice of quaility flintlock smoothbores than that of Beretta shotguns. As...

    new gun

I'd bet he never shot the rifle. I have taken more deer with a .530 RB than any other single projectile. A .54 is a super all around caliber for big game up to and including elk. You did good "Pilgram"... Snow

    new gun

So you are the one who bought this rifle. Being a lefty I check out EVERY left hand gun which comes up on the classifieds. From my discussion with the previous owner I believe that is birds eye maple. A very nice wood which makes a great gunstock, though not seen often in early muzzleloaders...

    home defense

I tend to agree with Claude. If my family's or my life where to be threatened I would want a more contemporary arm for protection. A 1911 or Glock in .45 ACP come to mind, perhaps a short barreled shotgun with a long tube. As the range in most home defense situations is measure in feet not yards...

    Proper Barrel Length for Underhammer

Numrich used a "lollypop" style peep sight with the recievers pre-drilled and tapped for the base to screw in. I recall John Taylor built one for a rifle of his make, perhaps a call to him would get you what you want. I've been scouring the net and every BP show within 100 miles and am yet to...

    Federal Hunting license

A general federal hunting licence could create a constitutional issue over a State's right to regulate the wildlife which most state consider the property of its citizenry. The lost revenue would amount to billions of dollars for the states which would subsequently create poorer wildlife...
