    Getting Closer...

Oh, the barrel will be cleaned well. Probably before I blue it since BC Perma blue is not the best stuff in the world. I have Barricade so Rust is no issue. I'd love to build a flintlock someday, however I plan on buying a house this spring and since I'm single as can be, I won't have that...

    Getting Closer...

Well, a year ago I bought a Lyman GPR kit and thought "By spring, I will have a working blackpowder rifle!" I was wrong. I worked on it some, roughed out the stock, sanded down half the metal work then just gave in. It was a LOT of work, and I don't know what happened. I took 2 weeks off...

    to all builders...

Watched it through for the second time so far... That man can sure work metal and wood into a mighty fine looking, and shooting, rifle!

    My first kit!

Beer? Heck, I brew my own! :) Although I also buy craft beer.

    My first kit!

Brass? I wish! The GPR kit has STEEL parts that come cast. PITA! I have the trigger guard down past most of the cast, with 80grit emery cloth, now I can move to wet/dry sandpaper on that. There are going to be a few scratches that I won't be able to get out, I work in optics and a single...

    Jo-Anne's sale

Quigley Down Under is a great movie! I like all the westerns Tom Selleck was in, and just watched Last Stand at Saber River last night! Purchased a 3-movie pack...:D All this talk about buying bulk material and cutting it to use has me thinking I will do the same instead of buying patches. I...

    My first kit!

Have been working on the metal this weekend. I have the trigger guard rough sanded about as much as I can stand, now to step down to a finer grit or two, and polish it up a bit. Working on the underlug/ramrod section now. Draw-filed the back side and the side flats and have to sand the manure out...

    My first kit!

I played with squaring up the trigger guard inlet a bit more last night using the 1/4" chisel I bought. Chisel needed a few passes over some 600grit wet/dry paper, but once I did that it was shaving wood! Going to order a chisel sharpening guide, they are only $10 or so. Today...I will work on...

    My first kit!

If I was going to buy anything, it would be a 1" belt sander. So many times have I needed one of those for a project... Nothin' else :D

    My first kit!

NO! Don't even tempt me to go to the Woodcraft store! (40 min drive) I don't plan on buying carving tools. I don't forsee a need...yet!

    My first kit!

Aww heck, tools ALONE have racked up over $50 so far! Most are things I wanted before, but never got. Wood chisels, file brush, bigger file. I also just ordered 400 .490 round balls (and some 16ga wads) to have around. Many of you have been here...These pics were before I started :)

    My first kit!

I have pictures of the kit before I did anything. I will take more here soon. Probably won't do much on it except on weekends. If I try during the week I will likely be late for work, or be up till 5am (I work second shift). I have a small drill press. The only part I am really concerned with...

    My first kit!

I have been using candle soot. It works just fine, and with the candles I have around, doesn't cost anything. I purchased a 1/4" and a 1/2" chisel today. That should help me out quite a bit, I don't see any other way of fitting the butt plate without good sharp chisels! Since the butt plate is...

    My first kit!

Using the shaper, I was able to get the buttstock pretty close to the buttplate, as well as most of the endcap. I also blended some of the over-cuts together on the stock. The rest, I feel, will be mostly sandpaper from here on out. The shaper sure saved me a LOT of time sanding! Tomorrow I am...

    My first kit!

Belt sander is a good idea...hmm now where would I put one? Do they sell small flap sanding drums anymore? those were my initial idea. I bought a knock-off of a stanley surform shaper at a local (ACE) hardware store. Looks to be store brand, so maybe it is made by stanley? It will be a lot...

    My first kit!

Well I have my first kit, ready to build. A nice .50cal Lyman Great Plains Rifle, percussion lock! This was purchased to A: get me into blackpowder/traditional muzzleloading, and B: to give me a winter project, because I sure don't need another bicycle...although I don't NEED another gun, but I...

    Happy Young Man

I don't even my my great plains kit yet, but this community here makes me feel better and better about mankind :) That kid is going to grow up to be a better human due to people showing all of the kindness. I'll tell ya if someone had taken me shooting as a kid, they would have been a HUGE...

Took my 54 to the range...

You could have split the order into 2f and 3f ;) Sounds like your in the same situation as I am. Pyrodex is EVERYWHERE. Real black powder is rarer than hens teeth! I have some Pyrodex P left over from a previously owned revolver, so I can shoot probably 100 balls before I need to buy anything...

Took my 54 to the range...

Just curious, but if you had good luck with Pyrodex RS (2f substitute) why did you decide to order 3f blackpowder? Either way, if 70gr of 3f gives you good accuracy, why not start playing with patches/ball diameter and see if you can squeeze more accuracy :)

I reside in Wayne County :) Pretty decent area and I have a great range to shoot at, even if it is paper only!
