    11 ga SXS Loads

Anticipating shooting my 1850ish original percussion 11 ga Liege Damascus barreled side-by-side again, but can't recall my target powder/shot loads. Anyone help with suggestions? Thanks!! mjw

    Striping a ramrod

When I recreate a striped rod, I use at least a 1/2 in to 5/8 in wide, thicker tape to mask off the stripes. Closeness/rate of twist to the stripe is easily modified by tape placement on the rod. Once you've decided, then take your rod and spaced tape, place on a table, and roll the rod onto the...

    Woods' Muzzle coning tool results

Thanks Goldhunter and SwampRat! Your responses are the answers I needed. I'll order a tool for the .40 and try that one first; then I'll go for the .50 (which is a Getz swamped barrel) and maybe try some fancy muzzle filing, too! mjw

    Woods' Muzzle coning tool results

Thanks Roy! Looks like I could go from mild to wild! All a matter of judicious file work, I guess. Is the initial coning done with an electric drill chucked with Joe's tool, then? mjw

    Woods' Muzzle coning tool results

OK, so everyone's comments have convinced me to go for it! Other than Joe's tool, what else is needed and what's the finished muzzle look like? I've got the mental pic like those olde time barrel muzzles that are REALLY opened up ------ mjwayne

    Woods' Muzzle coning tool results

Anyone care to comment on their results with Joe Woods' muzzle coning tool or share a photo of their results? I've got a .40 and a .50 cal barrel I'd like to open up and ease the loading of, so that a short starter is not required. Thanks, in anticipation! mjw

Opinions on the Hawken pistol from Track of the Wolf

To both scalper and LeMat1856: Thanks for your most appreciated comments! Scalper - the Hawken pistol was my number 4 gun building project, way back in 1981. I've made several since then. currently have a matched set of flint Kentucky pistols on the workbench and last year completed a flint So...

Opinions on the Hawken pistol from Track of the Wolf

scalper - Some always go for the best butt!!! Kidding aside, fitting the butt plate took a considerable amount of finessing - careful filing and really accurate drilling to properly locate the pin hole to secure it in place. Thanks for the positive comments mjw

Opinions on the Hawken pistol from Track of the Wolf

Parson - the belt hook was part of the parts set from TOW for this pistol. It's still available in either iron or brass: http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(bupk4lfmnukhbsqkfsquc4bm))/categories/PARTDETAIL.ASPX?CATID=14&SUBID=152&STYLEID=618&PARTNUM=HOOK-HP-I Thanks! MJW

Opinions on the Hawken pistol from Track of the Wolf

I completed my Hawken pistol (.54cal) back in '81 and have found it a lot of fun to shoot, as well. Heartily agree with Zonie, though, it's as much time to build as a full sized rifle, and then some. I had a gunsmith do the checkering for me, too. It's a good looking, faithful recreation of the...

    Rifled fowler birdshot load possibility?

Agreed Many Klatch! Had the opportunity at a recent local mini-rendezvous to shoot a friend's 'true' fowler soothie, but really loved that long sight plane! Besides, Getz barrels in octagon-to-round are noted for their lightness; they swing nicely! Thanks guys!! mjw

    Rifled fowler birdshot load possibility?

Thanks for the input, everyone! I was afraid it wouldn't work, but wanted to ask, anyway. As always, the Forum is the place to get the answer! mjw

    Rifled fowler birdshot load possibility?

I've acquired a flintlock fowler with a rifled 24ga (.58) 46" Getz barrel. Is it possible to shoot a birdshot load in this barrel with a modified modern shot cup or any other configuration? Your suggestions appreciated! Thanks mjw

Danger of Grain Runout in Ramrods

Given your very well substantiated facts about "safe" wooden ramrods, Zonie, is there anyone out there who can offer a true 'handsplit' no-grain runout ramrod blank at even near reasonable cost? mjw

Dixon's GUN MAKERS FAIR starts today

I, too, attended Dixon"s for the first time, even though it meant a 6 1/2 hour drive and two nights stay. This has to be the premier event for the ML longrifle builder! The opportunity to mingle, firsthand with so many of today's builders, suppliers, horners and craftsmen is an incredible...

I recently found a .395 double on a narrow Ebay search - they do occasionally show up, and you can usually beat any gun shop's price, even with shipping. Try this search parameter...

Fort Ti 250th F&I War Battle

Hi jbg! I heartily agree, I saw no one on the ground at all, until the fog of BP smoke obscured most everything in front of the French Line! It was surprising that such an effective volley of fire was sustained by both sides during the rain. When my party walked back to Sutler's Row, the darn...
