    Found a Smallbore

Great little rifles, and very accurate. Mine would put 3 balls into one ragged hole at 25 yards; that's plenty good enough! Padre

Hi there Matt! Another Aussie here, from Victoria. This site is a great place to meet folks and learn about lots of things. Padre

    Gap between pan and barrel.

Thank you! I'll work on it this weekend, then hopefully I can get out for some shooting the following weekend. Can't wait; never fired my own flintlock before!! Padre

    Gap between pan and barrel.

After reading all the replies I had another look at my rifle. It seems the cock is contacting the wood and tilting the pan away from the barrel, so removing some wood would seem the right thing to do. Any ideas on matching the color on the stock where I'll be removing the wood? Thanks again! Padre

    Gap between pan and barrel.

Thanks for the replies! I'll try the shim and see how it goes. The reason for changing the lock was to go from percussion to flintlock. Padre

    Gap between pan and barrel.

Hi there! I have a Pedersoli Kentucky rifle which I bought as a percussion (the dealer actually swapped the flintlock that was in it for a percussion lock). This lock has always fired without any problems. I recently bought a replacement flint lock and fitted it to my rifle. The problem I've...

    Stuck nipple!

Thanks Zonie, what a great idea! I wasn't going to put it into a vise for that very reason, but hadn't thought of your suggestion for holding it. Well, it's out now; soaked it a little more, used Zonie's method of holding it, a new nipple wrench, and out it came!! Thanks everyone...

    Stuck nipple!

Thanks everybody! It's been soaking for three days now so I'll give it another go. Might try that wrench from Thunder Ridge too. Kind regards to all, Padre

    Stuck nipple!

Just bought myself a used Uberti Remington New Model Army .44. It's in great condition, however I can't remove one of the nipples. Broke my nipple wrench and it didn't move at all. I've soaked it in RP7, but I don't have a nipple wrench now and even when I get another one, I don't want to break...

    Pedersoli Mortimer - Opinions

Hi Robbo! John Dunn did a write up in the Australian Shooter a couple of months back on this rifle. He took a deer with it and rated it highly. It was .54 cal. I'll try to find my copy of the article and let you know. Padre

    Kentucky .54 cal?

Thanks for the reply colonialhunter! I'm fairly new to all this, and appreciate the help on this forum. Padre :)

    Kentucky .54 cal?

Can anyone tell me (and I'm sure they can) if Kentucky style rifles were common in larger calibers than .50? Thanks in advance! Padre

    Pedersoli Kentucky

They definitely do! Just take off all your percussion bits, and the flintlock bits fit right on without any problem. Padre

    Suggested Charge?

I've read Mark Baker's load is 50 grains (3F I think). He says he has taken deer, amongst other animals, with that load. Is that a little on the light side, or would that be similar to what the old timers used, or maybe that is the most accurate load for his rifle? He obviously is very...

    Mini / maxi balls

Thanks everybody for the replies! And sorry I haven't answered sooner; I've been away from the computer for a while! My rifle is a Pedersoli Kentucky .50 cal with a 1:48 twist, so maybe I have a good choice in projectiles for hunting. I just wondered what was actually used back then, and I do...

    Mini / maxi balls

Can anyone tell this greenhorn whether anything other than a roundball is period correct for the time of the Kentucky longrifle? I prefer to shoot roundballs only but the regulations here for hunting sambar deer require a projectile weight of at least 230 grains, and I can't justify buying...

    Filling a powder horn

Thanks everybody! I was thinking the rolled up paper idea before I posted, but just thought I'd see what everybody else does. Sure are some good ideas there!

    Filling a powder horn

Thanks all for your responses, you've been a big help!

    Filling a powder horn

This is probably a dumb question, but how do you fill a powder horn through the neck easily? I've only used a horn that accepts a funnel so far, but I've just bought a nice Cureton horn and there's only one small hole in the neck! Thanks in advance for your help. Padre
